Another new owner, R9 without sights
« on: February 15, 2015, 11:34:46 AM »
Hello, just acquired a used R9 from a good friend of mine who bought this gun new in Aug 2005. He fired two mags through it and put it up. He offered to sell it to me since he is in a nursing home now. It comes with the case, safety lock, test fired brass, extra spring, a brass tool, literature with sales receipt, and two mags with finger rests installed (aftermarket, I believe). One of the mags is missing, but he believes he has it somewhere and is rounding it up. I took it apart and reassembled it just out of curiosity to see how hard it was, I only used a punch to push the takedown pin out. Reassembling the recoil spring without the tool was probably the hardest part of the task but it can be done. I am looking forward to shooting it!

Thanks - I am excited and can't wait to give it a try. I have an old leather holster that was a little too large for my Colt Jr .25 that happens to fit the R9 perfectly. Just wondering who made the finger rest though? From what I read it is probably from another similar sized gun mag that was modified to fit the R9 mag.

The grip extension is made by Pearce.  They are made for the Kahr PM9 and Colt Pocket Nine.

I tried them, but did not like how they worked with the heel mag release.

Cool...any recommendations for a grip extension? I would like to try shooting it both with and without one. Only thing I don't like about the extension is that it tends to interfere with inserting and drawing the gun from the pocket, which is my intended method of carry.

I agree. In pocket carry mode the extension is in the way.

I do have a nice extension made of machined aluminum. I bought it from Moe at (203) 797-6535

He also makes a nice extension for the Seecamp.

Just a warning: you will leave him a message and then wait a few days and maybe even call him back, but once you pay for them you will receive them. Fit and finish was nice. I think he gets $30-40 per extension. I have ordered 4 in total so far and they work as intended and look very nice.

I guess I am different, but I always felt that the extension helped me get a better grip when drawing the pistol from my pocket,  Once your hand is on it, there is nothing for it to catch on.

Inserting it is a slow and careful process for me, so that is no problem.

Josh, how do you like the extension on the Solo?

I love it! It makes the gun the all around biggest little gun out there IMO. The 8 round mag did little for me, but other than The pinky extension being a bit ugly (personal preference) it's great. Of course I IWB mine so I can't say how it would pocket carry. I will say it's a full grip with it in place, so I feel like a bit could be trimmed off of the bottom if a shorter 1/2 -2/3 pinky was acceptable. Great addition to the pistol all in all .

Don't worry about not having sights. Karl could have made his personal R9 anyway he wanted and the master chose to go sightless!

Josh

Thanks, I see that they are making them in black anodized now.  I think I will order a couple.  I just did not like the looks of the silver on a black frame.

I can't believe the 8 round mags.  Who ever designed those should be fired.

Did you ever think that he traded up to get sights?

Only kidding.

Good one Bob!

I do wonder what the brothers carry. I believe they both also had personal Robar Editions #R3001 and R3002 but I believe those were also sold to collectors (not me).

Correct me if I am wrong, but originally all the R9's were going to be sightless.  After getting complaints they added sights to the slide.  (If you can really call those sights.)

I think that if Larry Seecamp would have added sights to his pistols as an option, 90%+ would have sights.  He refused to.

To be honest I do not know for sure. I can say that the original R9 prototype did NOT have sights however many of the very first guns shipped (non-R prefix serial number) did have sights.

Armybrat,
Congrats on your Pup!! One of mine is a cousin 30 or so under yours.

Find out what it likes to eat and you'll have a great pocket rocket! As far as sights or sighted,I think its a personal decision, I like having them myself.
