Awful what if question?
« on: May 14, 2014, 08:48:27 PM »
I have been following the threads of those whom have had less than stellar experiences with their Pups during the "transition" and want to say I empathise with your consternation.

Here is my querry:  What if the new BIG BOX MANUFACTURER totally screws up what we all love about our hand-made, small production, works of art and changes it into something else.
What if they didn't honor our warranties, and chose to just replace with some new inferior substitute?

Indulge me here. What if you all ended up as our brothers who have non functioning Rohrbaughs, and were relegated to moving on to some other daily carry option.  What would be your next best choice?

Not yellin' fire in the theatre, just a what if...

I wouldn't send my gun in for warranty work if there was a chance that I'd get a new gun that is not worth even half the price I paid for my original Rohrbaugh.

I'd have a gunsmith work on it or sell it to a collector with full disclosure.

I would also start pocket carrying a 380 ACP.

I have the Kahr CM9 which I think is the next size up in terms of pocket nines and despite whatever the measurements and the weight is - there is a huge difference in the CM9 and the R9.

Somewhat related to this subject of the future continuing quality of the R9 I ran across a factory sheet of technical specifications. This was during the transition period when they were moving from carbon fiber grips to G-10.

"FRAME*: 7075 ALUMINUM
 SLIDE*: 17-4 STAINLESS STEEL
BARREL*: 416 STAINLESS STEEL" FREE BORED FOR 0.250 INCHES

*CNC machined from precision billets.

NOTE: Rohrbaugh Firearms reserves the right to change specifications without notice."

Will we ever see a disclosure of the materials like this again in the future? Not likely, IMO.

I don't mind playing the "what if" game, but I don't think either is the case.

Rohrbaugh absolutely intends to honor the existing warranties.  Eric has been training them in this process.

Also, there will be some changes to the R-9, but I don't think they will be significant and Karl had input on the process.  It may turn out that the "new" R-9 is slightly better than the old one... although perhaps not as collectible!  :)

The one change they should make is to the firing pin retainer.  I had mine rotate on my new gun and hold the slide slightly open.  I sent the gun back to the company and they said they put a entire new top end on the gun and Karl told me it would never happen again.  When they sent me the new gun I took it to the range and fired 20 Gold Dot's through without a problem, however when I cleaned the gun I noticed the firing pin retainer on the new top end gun was also loose.  When they are loose they can travel over into the groove and cause problems.

I sent the gun back once again and they sent me a brand new gun.  In stead of risking this happening again I sold the gun as it was brand new.  I loved the R9, however I think this was a major flaw in the R9's design as I read others had the same problem.

I now carry a Glock 42 as the weight is the same as the R9.  Only problem is I went from 9mm to .380
I figured this will be fine until the single stack Glock arrives one day.  I loved the R9 and never had a problem with Gold Dots other than that damn firing pin retainer that has plagued a number of others as well.
