Criminals just walk up and shoot you. Anyone that shoots realizes that you need to be 'Close', but not too close. And you need a reliable gun.

Chicago 'Hood-Rats' carry 22 revolvers. They get off 9 shoots and don't jam. They don't sit there and spend 2 seconds aiming, they just hit you anywhere, and then finish you off. A bank robber will go for capacity because he might wind up in a shoot-out. But self defense is normally 'close up and personal'

Interesting read, but how many police gunfights have you seen on TV or read about where handguns were fired rapidly until empty and the shooter continued to pull the trigger after it was empty?  Fear, adrenalin and tunnel vision would certainly account for multiple shots fired in self defense if/where possible I would imagine?
