Excellent information for planning, Jack; most travelers in the past haven't given this subject area much thought. I think there are some advances in flashlights and headlamps since this was written, however. I like products from TerraLux, such as the TLH-50 shown below. Nitecore has excellent flashlights also, in addition to others like Zebra.

Good advice.

To the large first aid kit, for travel to third-world countries,  I would recommend adding Fansidar
(anti-malarial) and Lomotil (anti-diarrheal).

(Don't ask me how I know.) ;)
