Point well taken MRC.

I will look forward to reading your first impressions of the pistol.

Not really a pocket piece to me either.

Really neat design from the looks of it though.

Thanks for the info.

The 45 is just a whole new ballgame when it comes to ultra-compact pistols.  It can only be scaled down so far and still function reliably.

But when you compare the Boberg XR9-S shorty to the R9, the XR9-S is taller, and a lot heavier than the R9:

Rohrbaugh R9
Caliber: 9mm
Barrel: 2.9 in
Length: 5.2 in
Height: 3.7 in
Slide Width: .82 in
Width at thickest part of pistol: .95 in
Weight: 13.5 oz, magazine 1.6 oz
Capacity: 6+1 Rounds

Boberg XR9-S (Shorty)
Caliber: 9mm
Barrel: 3.35 in
Length: 5.1 in
Height: 4.2 in
Width: .96 in
Weight: 17.5 oz
Capacity: 7+1 Rounds

No doubt Count that the R9 wins the size game every time.

For me, performance is the key and in my hands at least, the Solo, the PM9, and the XR9 all beat the R9 by a large margin.

All of them still fit in my pocket, but the XR9 is about my limit.  In my estimation, the R9 is the best backup made period, but I do not need that.

Here is a quote from Boberg's head Gunsmith.  This explains some of the recoil reduction.  I have seen videos of Arne shooting his 9mm with no recoil spring in it.  He just "flips" the muzzle down and forward to return the slide.

"the XR series does not use a recoil spring... the spring that runs the length of the slide is simply a slide return spring. you could toss it in the trash and shoot he pistol the rest of your life, you would just need to slap the slide forward manually.

in the XR series, the recoil is being absorbed by the lift mechanism and the rotating barrel mechanism. these are FAR more efficient at absorbing energy than a simple heavily packed recoil spring and a bunch of extra weight on the slide could ever do. that is how we are the softest felt recoil .45 and 9mm subcompact out there!"

Sounds quite ingenious.

I've read where you prefer the overall design of the solo over the boberg 9mm MRC.

That being said, do you feel like this will win a spot of EDC on your person or will it be relegated to safe and range time only if it's 100% reliable and very shootable?

It is not a pocket gun, at least not for me, so i will just have to see how it turns out.

Let's face it, this is not  a proven design for the 45 yet.  I will make my mind up after a few months of shooting.

It really is the most revolutionary pistol design to come out since the Glock.

Here is a write-up on the XR45-s.

I talked to Arne Boberg and parts have been slow coming in, but they should start shipping in 2 weeks.  Mine are in the first batch to go out.  It should be interesting.

Smaller than the XDS, less felt recoil and hols one more round???

Wow. Wonder how reliable it will be.

Looks awesome MRC. Thanks for the link

I just saw a post on the Boberg Forum that the first batch of XR45's are leaving Minnesota on Monday.

Mine should be in that group.

I guess I jumped to the conclusion that since I ordered mine on the first day that sales opened, I would be in the first batch delivered.  I ordered the platinum version and Boberg is waiting on those frames from the plater.

Here is a link showing the first shipment, all standard models.  Shucks!

It has been so quiet around here I thought I would add this.

I received word today that my Boberg XR45s will arrive at my Dealer's shop tomorrow.  Only two months late.  I ordered the platinum and the frames were delayed at the plater's until now.

Hopefully I will get out to the range in the next couple of days.

Hope to hear range reports.
