I "built" one last Winter.  Savage .22 with the goal of getting a can for it in the next 12 months.  It's a sweet shooter.

Jack_F,

I had picked out a S/A SOCOM II and then I did a 180. My next rifle project will now be a SBR AR platform in .300 Blackout. But to answer your question, of those you listed the S/A in the SOCOM II would be my pick.
I want to get a can for the SBR and I like the .30 cal but ability to use AR magazines. Just my two cents for you.

I have a Ruger Scout rifle. Darn thing is almost indestructible. I like the long eye relief scope positioning. Nice and short, easy to swing up. and cheap. I bought mine for $495.

The Ruger Scout was my inspiration to "build" my Savage.  I couldn't get the Ruger, so I pacified myself with the Savage until demand eased off a bit.  That's a Crazy Eddie INSANE price.  Are there any more available at that price?

We have a rather large gun store here and Ruger sent a rep with special pricing on the guns. The store had a stack of about 50 of the Ruger scouts sitting on thier floor at the time. Special Ruger pricing. The will still beat anyone's advertised price in the country. Even on the Internet. They had the smith and wesson performance center guy one time and he did a free trigger job on my Governor.

I have the Ruger Gunsite Scout and it is a nice rifle.  I have a Leupold scout scope on mine and it points nicely and should make for a great all-around gun.  I have always liked the scout rifle concept and built myself a 10/22 scout for small game hunting and plinking.  It sports the same scope and is pretty lightweight and easy to tote around in the field all day.

Ruger or Savage.

Ruger is heavier, but has a better stock, and it's built like a tank.

Savage is lighter, better trigger(IMO), Mags don't stick out  a foot from the gun should you need to shoot from prone position, and it's cheaper. Their also making it in 7.62x39mm now. I'd still go for the 308 though.

as someone who has shot/handled both, their great rifles for not a lot of money.

When Colonel Jeff Cooper was designing the Scout Rifle I think he had the following in mind:

"The general-purpose rifle will do equally well for all but specialized hunting, as well as for fighting; thus it must be powerful enough to kill any living target of reasonable size. If you insist upon a definition of 'reasonable size,' let us introduce an arbitrary mass figure of about 1,000 lb (454 kg)." (Cooper, Jeff, The Art of the Rifle, p. 18)

I do not yet own a Scout, but I have one rifle that I believe is not too far removed from the Colonel's criteria for a "general-purpose rifle" -- this Israeli Military Industries Timber Wolf Pump Rifle:

It's specifications are as follows:

Caliber .357 Magnum/.38 special
Capacity 10 shots
Weight 6.1 lbs
Overall length 37"
Barrel 18.5"
Twist RH 10 grooves, 1/20 inches
Tube Magazine Feed
Sight Radius 14"
Front Sight Fixed
Rear Sight Adjustable
Stock Adjustable (Up/Down)
One-Bolt Takedown

The Timber Wolf is no longer manufactured, but they occasionally show up on the auction boards. This one of mine has been coated in Wilson Combat ARMOR-TUFF® Protective Firearms Finish (OD Green and Black). Until I can add a true Scout Rifle to my collection, this Timber Wolf will continue to serve as my "general-purpose rifle."

When I do spring for a Scout, I am currently inclined to think it will be for one of the Ruger Gunsite models.

Richard - the Timber Wolf was always on my "List", but kept getting shoved down by higher priority guns until it was no longer available -- till forgotten.  I'm glad to see you are keeping it remembered for us.  Truly a nice piece.

Although it falls outside of the definition of a Scout rifle because of its length and weight, the Remington 700 SPS is a fine rifle with an excellent trigger. If I were in the market for a .308 it would be at the top of my list.

Richard, Fine looking Timber Wolf, I saw one for sale a while back but it was pretty well worn and had rust & pitting on the barrel.  :(
I always liked the pump 22s but never bought one maybe I will put one on my list.  8)
