Well I did it!  I took my Covert with the rub marks on the barrel to my gunsmith for a polish job.  She looks a lot better to me know.  Please see the before and after.  Thanks, Robert   http://s1197.photobucket.com/albums/aa425/Robert_Madison/COVERT/

Looks great. If I owned a Covert, I would do the same.
Now its ready for the range. Let us know how it shoots.

AP,

One thing I would keep in mind is that as far as I know the Covert is not an official Rohrbaugh model. I think after Rohrbugh discontinued the Special Forces edition some of the major distributors wanted to keep offering a Wilson finished R9 to customers and with Rohrbaughs blessing facilitated getting the guns produced. I believe the original warranties are valid though b/c Rohrbaugh approved it (please correct me if Im wrong). None of this is a negative, but I would not pay a premium over what the R9+finishing costs are because it is not a super limited production gun or anything like that.

What Adam (Z) mentioned about the finish on the barrel wearing poorly after shooting it a few times would also really bother me. If I were to get a coated gun it would be the Robar finish based on the positive experiences of those like John (Yankee) and others have had. Just my 2 cents.

this is correct. apparently a distributor was buying the R9's and turning them into "Coverts" via Wilson with the use of Armor Tough/Tuff, i think thats the name.....

I don't think i'd go for something like that though, not b/c of the all black, but b/c the Rohrbaughs hand-fit their guns. That's all they work on all day, the R9. I'd feel a little hesitant buying a gun they built, then it was disassembled/sprayed/reassembled by someone who builds 1911's. I'm a fan of bill wilson's work, but something irks me about a R9 rebuilt by someone who doesn't do it for a living. I'd be very surprised if Rohrbaugh warranties someone else's work, even if it is Wilson's. there just might be a certain fit/feel that they miss out on when doing putting it together. It's only speculation, but i'll stick with a Stealth R9.

My response from Maria:

Robert,

Pricing on this gun is related to material, labor and the finish.  Wilsons
Armor Tuff coating has anti-galling properties that make it easier to clean
and maintain your firearm.  There will be normal wear patterns as seen in
your pictures that might not show on other guns that are coated with Armor
Tuff because our tolerances are tighter than most guns.  The tighter
tolerances will cause friction and the normal wear patterns that you're
seeing.  In reference to the guide rod Wilson suggested not doing the guide
rod because of tolerances but felt that the other parts which are coated
would receive the advantage of the Armor Tuff coating.

Subject: Covert

Hi Maria,
I purchased this Rohrbaugh/Wilson Covert about 8 months ago.
I have fired about 30 rounds threw the pistol.
I have two issues for a $1800 gun.
The recoil spring plunger is SILVER and not black like the rest of the
pistol, WHY???
Also, the black is worn off over the chamber with about 30 rounds shot.
Should this be???
Attached are three pictures.
Thanks,
Robert

And Rohrbaugh does continue to warrant the Covert.
