Newbe questions
« on: April 16, 2012, 05:43:07 PM »
Hi,

New R9s owner and forum member. Have several questions I hope someone can help me with.
Researching the forum am I correct in concluding the Speer Gold Dot 115 grain bullet is the best for the range?
What is recommended as the best protection (stopping power) cartridge?
Is the +P or the +P+ ammo clearly marked or is that something I need to really look for?
I have a LOT of Winchester 9mm Luger supersonic match 147 GR. FMJ ammo. It's older ammo but I shoot it thru my 9mm Beretta 92 FS all the time with no problems. Think it would be ok to use at the range in the R9?

Hi welcome to the forum. I'll take a first shot at helping answer your questions but hopefully others will chime in as well.

Researching the forum am I correct in concluding the Speer Gold Dot 115 grain bullet is the best for the range?
-I have tried 100+ rounds of both the Gold Dot 115 gran and the larger ones. R9s will eat Gold Dots all day long.

Is the +P or the +P+ ammo clearly marked or is that something I need to really look for?
-The boxes are clearly marked, I am not sure about the individual rounds, as I have never purchased any.

-I have been using WWB (white box) at the range with only one jam.

Remington UMC will JAM EVERY SINGLE ROUND! so dont use that.

Enjoy the R9

Welcome to the forum! :)

I only run Speer 115 grain GD through all my PUPs and have had no issues.
I use it for the range and carry.

I have used mostly Gold Dots 124 and 147 without issues.  I also recently used Winchester silvertips with no issues.  For range use, Speer Lawman is less expensive and I have had no problems with those either.  R9's seem to be a lot like people...each has its own personality, likes and dislikes.  Get to know yours; once you do you will have a friend for life.

Very well said.
You need to run the ammo your PUP likes!
Try it and see what works best for you. :)

Welcome to the Forum.  What others have said with the key being some R9s do have a special diet.  Find what that is and you'll be a happy R9 owner.  Again welcome, and enjoy!

bytedisk, welcome to the group.
Shoot whatever you have if it works stick with it, if it doesn't move on to the next one, there is no solid answer as each pup can be different.

welcome to the forum, enjoy it here and the new pup. I shoot Gold Dot 124s, no problems, good defense round also. Don't buy or shoot +P or +p+ ammo.  Tom

Welcome to the Forum, srr.  Just a suggestion, but would start with Gold Dots, either 115 gr. or 124 gr. and if that works, which it should, stay with it.  Quite a number of members here use this ammo with good results.  Oh!  and use the LE as it's cheaper.

Congrats on the R9 purchase.  You may find that some R9's have a strict diet; starting with the Gold Dots, narrows the possiblities of failure due to such tight tolerances with the Rohrbaugh.  Enjoy your new R9.

On my first range session with the Pup I took the sound advice of many here and tried 124gr. Gold Dot HP. The little gun loved it and so I'm going to keep feeding it that. And, like the others warn, do NOT feed it +P or +P+ ammo. It is after all, not a range gun or a common plinker.

Oh and by the way, welcome to the forum! It's good to have you here.

srr11, welcome to the group.
It can't hurt to try the 115 Federals if they work in your pup stick with them. My pup will shoot anything or I should say I have not found any brand or bullet weight ammo that it won't shoot.

Hey John.  Be sure to say your pup has the Robar finish, inside and out.    ;D

John,

I would be interested to see if your Robar can fire Remington UMC reliably. First round wont even feed with that stuff let alone any follow up rounds. And things get so jammed up that i usually end up hurting myself trying to clear a round. But somehow both the gold dots and WWB feed fine.

You asked for it, you got it. ;D I dug through my 9mm ammo and found two boxes of Rem UMC, 115gr.
I grabbed 7 rounds and headed out in the rain to see how they do, as I started loading the mag I realized I only grabbed 6 rounds so not wanting to walk the 130 feet back to the house, this will have to do. 8)
Full mag inserted into pup, rack the slide and one is now in the pipe, six squeezes of the trigger and six empties are now on the ground. ;D
If it had not been raining I would have tried a couple of mags. ;)
I believe I fired the UMCs before but could not remember for sure.
