I posted on another forum that I seriously doubted that even one Rohrbaugh owner out of a thousand would trade in their R9 for the M&P Shield, but I thought I would pose the question here -  I could be wrong.

Is anyone even considering it?

The reason I posted the question here instead of the "Other Guns" section is that to me, the question is more about the Rohrbaugh R9 than the Smith...

Nor I; don't have anything against the Shield and even may consider getting a .40; but would just purchase it outright.

For EDC I will take my PUP any day over a Shield.

Not to say I would not own a shield though!

I would consider adding it to the carry rotation, but I can't think of anything that could replace my pup.

I personally think the two pistols have two different roles, I wouldn't consider the Shield a pocket pistol, but you run across people who really love a particular brand or gun and I think their enthusiam clouds their reasoning.  It's easy to find Glock fanatics who will absolutely insist the Glock 26 is definately a pocket pistol.  I've run into fans of the Beretta Nano who say the same thing.

There are some people who are opining that people will trade their Kahr PM9 and CM9s in for this thing and I don't see that happening either.

To me, the Kahr PM9 is close to the Rohrbaugh, but this M&P Shield is just large enough to put it out of the pocket pistol category.  I don't know why people would trade their PM9s in for it.

Really really can't see anyone replacing their R9 with a Sheild.  The M&P will probably be fine with some kind IWB holster or someting but I don't see being practical to pull out of a pocket.

I really like S&W guns.  I will review, and likely own a Shield.

But, I am not trading an R-9 for a Shield, nor am I trading my Lexus for a Toyota.

OK, I don't have a Lexus, but you know what I mean.  Toyotas are great cars, but they are not Lexuses...Lexi....whatever.

I have a Shield and really like the trigger and reset. I carried my R9 in my pocket the last two days. The R9 will be difficult if not impossoble to replace as a pocket gun.....JMO.... ;)...of course all forum members know that... ;D

I may buy one of the 40 calls but not as a replacement to my pup or any other carry gun I have.

No way no how!  I will probably buy a shield though  :D.  The r9 is the perfect carry gun,  I've entertained trading my elite but would be more inclined to trade it for a regular r9 and something else, I don't think after having owned an r9 if anything else will do.

Rarely do I quote a post of my own, but this thread calls for an exception.

Here is a fine, slim, concealable, lightweight, striker-fired, polymer pistol with stainless-steel slide and barrel weighing 19 ounces:

Now, here is a fine, slim, concealable, lightweight, hammer-fired, aircraft-aluminum-alloy pistol with stainless-steel slide and barrel weiging 13 ounces -- literally permeated with "soul" as it leaves the line and capable of receiving as much more "soul" as the owner cares to give it:

Both pistols will protect you when the dreck hits the rotating blades, but I know which one I would choose to take with me to Valhalla.

You never know what you have until it's gone...

I had a Browning High Power which I didn't really have a use for (or so I thought) since I had a P7M8...

Boy do I miss that BHP.

I also had a Colt Mustang, and I now I miss it to...

It does seem that some people were trading in some guns for the Shield - Kel-Tecs, Glock 26, M&P Compact for instance...   S&W did a smart thing by having those guns available when the media blitz/product announcement / unvieling took place.  People were predicting that folks would trade in their Kahr PM9/CM9/MK9 Rohrbaugh R9 - and all sorts of other models to get the Sheild and I just didn't see it happening, certainly not with R9 owners.

I like the Shield -- a lot.  In fact, maybe enough  to get me to trade my Glock for a full-size M&P.  (Trade in the figurative sense, not the literal sense--i.e., trade places in my heart).

However, the Shield and the R-9 are totally different guns.  PM-9, also different--but a little closer.  Putting aside the quality issues, an R-9 is a true pocket gun.  The Shield is not.  You might get away with pocket carry in the right sized pocket, but its not a pocket gun.

As for actually trading guns -- be careful.  You often regret the ones that get away.
