Cheap 147gr practice ammo that cycles reliably in the R9 ?
« on: February 27, 2012, 08:59:47 AM »
I have read on this forum that Speer Lawman 115gr duplicates the the performance of the 147gr GDHP?

I don't understand how that can be.  How can a 115gr round create the same recoil impulse as a 147gr round?

Is the Fiocchi 147gr FMJ the cheapest 147gr practice ammo? I think it oes for around $14.00 a box ???

Has anyone used it in their R9

Are there any cheaper 147gr 9mm rounds out there?

I have a couple of boxes of Fiocchi but have not tried it.

I am due for a range trip in the next couple of weeks and may try it.

I have only fired 115GD in all of the R9s and have been secessful.

I would think the Speer Lawman 147gr TMJ would simulate the 147gr GDHP more than the 115gr.

Never said 115 was the same as 147. Simply referred you to a source for quality practice ammo at a decent price. If you reread the thread in question you will see that the quote referred to was in response to the OPs use of 115 Gold Dots.

It looks like American Eagle might be the cheapest 147gr practice ammo, I'm not sure what people think of it.

I have had bad experiences with Remington L9MM3 with significant differences in bullet hieght within a single 50 rd box - about ⅛" difference from shortest to tallest.  I wouldn't want to run it through an R9 (me personally).

I'm looking for a cheap practice round excluding steel cased, and copper-washed, and bullets that contain ground scrap metal in them...

As RickP said, Speer Lawman is a relatively inexpensive way to practice with good ammo that simulates the Gold Dot round. It is brass cased with reliable CCI primers. The price point is about 10-15 percent higher than WWB at Academy but cheaper in quantity lots through on-line ammo distributors.

I just noticed that the Lawman 147gr are flat-nosed (I guess that more closely simulates the typical premium SD FMJ)

Does anyone use these for practice ammo in their R9?  And do they cycle the R9 reliably?

As for cheaper stuff, I haven't had any problems with the Magtech 115 gr FMC at all. I also have some of their hollow points (Guardian Gold) en route to try out. As for light strikes, the only one so far was with the Remington UMC 115 gr FMJ, but just the one in a bunch. I haven't shot any known hard primer ammo thru it, so can't report on that. The 147 gr difference you're wondering about might be due to the lower velocity. I've shot both in various guns and can't really say it's all that noticeable of a difference to me.

Hey Guys,

Here's a quote from Speer's Website, discussing their Lawman Brand of ammo:

http://www.speer-ammo.com/products/lawman.aspx

"Many Lawman loads duplicate the velocities and bullet weights we load in Gold DotŪ so your practice is realistic."

Now it just so happens that I have a box of both 147gr Lawman and Gold Dot sitting in front of me.  Here's what it says on the side of the Lawman Box:

"Lawman ammunition is designed to meet the strict training needs of Law Enforcement Professionals.  Each Speer FMJ or TMJ load is specifically engineered to deliver the feel and performance of its Gold Dot companion cartridge."

As for price, I bought this stuff from SGAmmo.  Right at this very moment, they are selling it at $12.49 for a fifty round box.
