Does anyone have exeperience with 147 HST?
« on: October 20, 2011, 10:06:55 AM »
Federal's  147GR hst - P9HST2

Federal's 147 HST is one of the loads that I'd like to be able to carry - this along with the Winchester Ranger "T" in 147gr

I just don't hear much about the HST with the R9.

I have definitely fired the Ranger T 147s in my pup but I'm not sure about the Federals and I'm not home to check.
The Rangers work great in my gun. :D

I have heard it's kind of a fast round for the 147 - somewhere around 1000fps out of a 4" barrel, whereas most 147 offerings are in the 985 - 990fps range

I have run a couple of magazines of the following P9HS2 through my stealth, with no function issues and no real noticeable difference in recoil from its usual diet of 115 JHP Gold Dots and 147 JHP Gold Dots:

This load is listed as the P9HS2 and velocity is listed at 1000 fps.  Not sure how similar this is to the P9HST2.

I seem to remember reading somewhere that 147 grain rounds were not the best for the R9 because of the extra stress on the slide, frame, etc caused by the heavier bullet. I'm not sure how true that is but I'd be interested to find out from someone more knowledgeable.

I can't say I remember that info, but I can't say I remember what I had for dinner three days ago either.;D
I don't notice any real difference in recoil between the 115gr, 124gr or the 147gr ammo.
I believe Richard shot the heavier Golden Sabers for several years and only switched to the lighter weight bullets because of the compatibility issue with his P7 (the heavier bullet can throw the timing off on the P7s as they were designed around the NATO rounds)

I was probably thinking about Richard's P7 instead of an R9. Maybe I'll try some 147gr rounds soon.
Don't worry John, I've been working on so many different projects lately that I can't even remember having dinner three days ago...

Considering the little range the R9 gets compared to full sized pistols, 147's and stress on the gun means little to me.  I 'm more concerned with function.

Count,
My R9 likes the W/W subsonic 147 JHP and I do too. I think it has less felt recoil. I also notice much less muzzle blast compared to the 115gr ammo.

I just ran a couple of mags of  Federal Premium Law Enforcement 124 grain HST HP's 2 weeks ago.  They ran perfectly.  That's now what is loaded in my Stealth.

The box shows a "Muzzle Velocity" of 1150 fps and 330 ft. lbs. of energy at 25 yards.

I'm a long time believer in Gold Dots but I've switched now to HST.

Heres a link to my experience with Federal 147 grain Hydra Shok.   The only HST I tried was .45acp and I didn't care for it.

^ Thanks so much.

The 147 HSTs have the same velocity as the 147 Hydro-Shocks.

I am mostly worried about the cycle time / recoil impulse and stovepipes, but if the R9 cycles properly with 147gr Hydro-Shocks it should cycle with HSTs.
