Introduction

Hello all!

I've been a member here, under the shortened form of my name, since '09. But...I forgot my password, and have a new e-mail address since then, so I simply re-registered in order to post.

I finally joined the club. I picked up a Stealth R9S from a buddy at work, at what I consider a steal. I haven't had the chance to shoot it yet. He was carrying 147g Hydra Shoks in it and they functioned fine.

I also prefer 147s, but I have the 115g Gold Dots in it now just because of the recommendations. I got them, plus some 147 Gold Dots and some 115g WWB to try out.

From Rohrbaugh I ordered: 4 recoil springs (-Maria explained that their power is still out from hurricane Irene, so...) a Nemesis holster for the short term and some grip screws in case I strip them and a nice hex wrench to keep 'em tight off Amazon. Also I was in touch with Lisa at Hedley holsters to order an RB.

It took a couple of days to get used to the small size of the pup, I borrowed it for five days with the eye towards deciding if I wanted it. Days one and two I was figuring out how to tell my buddy that I didn't like it. ...From day three on I suddenly got it.  

Anyway, I'm glad to be here, and here's a quick and dirty pic of the Rohrbaugh with some of my other small hardware.

Yeah, you're probably right. I had a S&W 640 sixteen, seventeen years ago; carried it as a back up. The G26 came out and it seemed like a no-brainer: eleven rounds compared to five, I could feed it from my mag pouches, twice the barrel length/sight radius... I mean, come on!  So I traded the 640. But the 26 never carried off duty like the J.

I really like it. I shoot great with it. And I carry it a lot, but...

So I grabbed a 642, but honestly, in this day and age, 5 rounds with a speed strip reload is just not enough.

I'm not looking for an absolutely defensive gun. I may have to engage, not just evac. It's not just about protecting me and mine. At the absolute minimum, I'm looking to be able to double tap three bad guys, with an extra or a miss.

-And that's the seven rounds in an "all-the-time" R9.

Permit me also to congratulate you on your R9 and echo what John said.

I used to load 147-grain Golden Sabers in my R9, under the "throw-a-bigger-rock" theory, and never had any problems with the load. I dropped back to the 124-grain round only because I started carrying my HK P7 as a primary and learned that Hechler & Koch had designed the P7's gas-retarded recoil system around 115/124-grain ammunition. It became a pain in the backside trying to keep the ammo straight during cleaning time.

I had the digital scale out about ninety seconds after I opened the box of 147g Gold Dots. -Or was it the 115s.

Wait.

This was a 147g. I think. Right?

Some here have recommended loading only 6 rounds because a preponderance of the failure to feed issues have apparently occurred with the second round from a fully loaded magazine (6 in the magazine and one chambered).  Comments?  Anyone?

Hey John, thanks for the welcome.

For my money, I don't download magazines. If I end up finding that I can't carry it full, I'll chalk it up as a failed experiment and move on.

I remember my Dad, a lifer, talking about downloading M16 magazines because they didn't feed right. That's forty years ago.

Today I use mostly Magpuls in my AR and it's not an issue.

It's a big leap of faith to go out on the cutting edge of firearms tech when it's not for sport. For the two extra rounds, and a reasonable expectation of a (somewhat) faster reload, I've picked the R9 over the J frame.

For just one extra? I think I'd go back to five-for-sure at contact distance and live with the speed strip.

I do fully load my AR also...with the newer magazines and better weapons it doesn't seem to make a difference.  I have never had a problem with fully loaded R9 magazines, but suspect that you should, as I'm sure you do, vet each magazine individually as to performance and trustworthiness.

I'm one of the few around here who "downloads" magazines by one round, but it is just due to habit left over from the 1960s. Metallurgy and spring technology have come light years since then. But I'm what you might call "old school," and old habits die hard.
