First week of carry, 2nd range session
« on: August 06, 2010, 09:37:50 PM »
Well I purchased a Robar last week and pocket carried (empty chamber) with no holster for a few days.  Found a thin J-frame holster that held the R9s ok and used it for a day or so. I received the loaner desantis "karma" holster a few days ago and will conceal with it until my Meco shark split design arrives. (thanks Reinz for the holster!!!!!)
This is the first solid week I have carried ever, I kept it in my rear pocket. It feels great, I opted not to wear scrubs this week. I thought I had deep pocketed pants (Mountain Khakis and North Face), but I find I see the shiny back end of the gun when I look back down into/at my pocket.
My wife says she can't see it, I did find when I bent down that it had to be visible so I opted to pull out a shirt tail and avoid bending down while at the mall today.
I Stopped by the range and tried out the silver tips that arrived a few days ago. Shot 12 rounds and I was done, If I ever get in a gun fight, I will have to stop at 12 rounds and call time out to let my hand rest....no it's not that bad at all. But I was ready to move over to the Glock 17 to finish the range session.
I found the silver tips to feel more snappy than the federal hollow points I picked up at the range last week. But, its been a week since I shot ithe federals and its hard to compare a week later.
At 10-15 feet I was able to keep a nice tight pattern. (few inches easily) I found with moderatly slow fire it is very accurate, of course as I shoot faster the pattern opens; but is very effective. I am impressed with the gun, maybe the stealth would be easier to conceal. But I really like the robar finish and feel it will be durable for many years.
I almost named this thread thead "does my butt look big in this holster"  as I found the tempation to mirror check for printing to great and also humorous.
I had purchased several J frames thinking that those would be easily concealed, I gave up after a few attempts to carry; but I did not invest in a great holster.
I am extremely happy with the Rohrbaugh purchase, I might purchase another (almost got the Farmie last week).
For several years I have been looking for something greater than .380 that I could easily conceal.  There are folks willing to completely change their warbrobe and stuff 1911s in all types of places to conceal; At this point in my life its not for me.  But with the Rohrbaugh I don't have to sacrifice much to have a 9mm.  If I anticipate a higher threat level likely I could always add on a full size and keep the R9 as backup.
I am glad the forum was were for me to read to help me decide, I post this hoping someone on the fence might find this usefull.

Scub, good range report and enjoyable post. While I don't think my R9's bother me as much as yours does you, they are still not the most comfortable guns to shoot. Like you, I usually shoot two magazines. I do this pretty often and I think that this keeps me from getting too rusty. Strangely enough, I'm just the opposite as far as recoil goes. I find the silvertips to be less "harsh" than the Federals or the Gold Dots. I guess everyone is different as far as ammo is concerned. Thanks for posting.      Gene

Bryan.  Certainly glad you are happy with the Robar and a great decision, for sure.  I'm sure your words will help others.  Continue to enjoy.  You have said it well.

scubadds,
You know if you were at the South Park Mall carrying a weapon it's a no no. ;D Actually most malls do no allow weapons of any kind. I must admit I may have carried at several malls, a few post offices, hospitals etc, but I may be mistaken.  :o

Excellent report, and already thinking of another.

Scuba:

Thanks for the good report!

My experience with concealed pocket carry when I began the practice "back in the day" was that for the first week or so I felt that everyone I passed had to be able to see that I was "packing." Now, I don't even give it a second thought. I actually feel out of balance if I don't have a gun in my pocket.

Stay safe!

I back pock carry my R9's in a desantis superfly holster (the model is for the Ruger LCP) and the holster is snug but it works perfectly and it is smaller than the J frame pocket holsters,

Did I say "mall"? I meant Harris Teeter... ::)
No I am in Wilmington, hadn't noticed signs at the mall here, but hadn't looked lately....

Just sold a Colt '67 Commercial, maybe I will run across a stealth somewhere.

Recoil really isn't bad, its just not a range gun.
I had mentioned finding a used Rohrbaugh and shooting it a ton as a test....I think I'm good without doing that.
I think the Desantis I have is the same or very similar, no complaints except if you get out on a hot humid day it gets a little hot back there. But I figure  If I were to keep it much longer I would add a thin perforated flap onto the holster to keep the grip area from printing in thin nylon type pants. (Like the North face pants I wear on some hot and humid days)

The funny thing about the malls is they do not have the no firearms signs on the doors but have it listed in the Mall Rules.
To be legal the signs must be posted on all doors that provide access to the mall.
I never worry about malls, the post office is a different matter. I was in a new post office in Myrtle Beach and they have metal detectors at the entrance.

That's good to know, but in the past, where did the threat occur while in a post office? From the workers wasn't it?

There have been two recent robberies here in Ga. with someone just walking in the post office and doing the robbery; authorites don't know if they're connected.

Great report.  I love the stealth. The shop down here I told you about is suppose to get a couple in soon and he is suppose to call me when they do. I'll let you know if you don't find one sooner.  Let me know when you come to Charlotte next.

will do.
Ran my first steel plate challenge yesterday at Ant Hill Range in Southport.  That was a blast; one day I will get the nerve to shoot the course with the Rohrbaugh.
