R9 132 - Six Years and Counting
« on: May 18, 2010, 11:53:44 AM »
I first shot my then newly acquired R9 132 on May 19, 2004 -- which will be six years ago tomorrow. It has become my practice around this time each year to retrieve from archives the following report of my first range session with the pistol which has been my 24/7 CCW piece since that first range session:

I finally got to the range this afternoon to test fire my new R9. Two friends went with me, one a Deputy Sheriff and the other a retired firearms instructor for the Police Department. It was a great session with a lot of brass collected on the tarp.

Shooting from 7 and 10 yards using a Regional Law Enforcement Academy silhouette target, I ran 54 rounds through the R9 before my right hand began to complain. I started out using Winchester 115 Gr. Target/Range FMJ ammunition and then switched over to Remington 147 Gr. Golden Saber BJHP. The felt recoil of this little cannon with both loads was impressive, but seemed to be noticeably more so with the Golden Sabers.

The first two rounds were errant and wound up on opposite sides of the target in the "2" zone -- "anticipation of recoil," my instructor friend chided. After that, I settled down and managed to keep the next 52 in the "5" zone (center mass). The trick is just to relax and then point and shoot the little beast, keeping both eyes open and concentrating on the front sight. The trigger pull, which I originally estimated at about 8 pounds, seemed more like 10 toward the end -- due, no doubt, to hand fatigue.

After I had worn out my right hand, the instructor tried the R9 -- all six shots grouped nicely in the "5" zone, of course. When he turned around and handed the empty pistol back to me, his words were: "That's a nice shooting gun."

After six years, "132" is still one "nice shooting gun."

And here is the mandatory "anniversary photo" -- R9 132 and a few friends, six years and counting:

Very nice view, Richard.  Thanks for reminiscing; and I see some blue CF grips!  The 132 is a wonder in it's own right!

Thank you, KJ. I should have mentioned that the cherry-wood display stand was made by John ("yankee2500").

(The guilded leather portfolio on which everything is sitting is from a bazaar in Marrakesh, Morocco.  That's one place on the African continent of which I have only pleasant memories.)   8)

That relationship sounds like a deep emotional attachment to me.

Corey.  Richard responded to one of my posts about an early Farmingdale with his post from the following tread; six posts down from the top of the page.    ;D

Richard,
#132 may be one nice shooting gun, it is also one nice looking gun.
Happy Anniversary to you and one thirty two, may you have many more together.

John:

Thank you, Sir! That cherry-wood display stand you made is a work of art in itself and shows the R9 to best advantage. Some of that Hedley gun leather helps things as well.  8)

Richard I have a question for you on about finish wear.  Now that you have carried the same R9 for over 2000 days is there any finish wear under the trigger guard and dust cover from rubbing on the holster?  I have seen a couple that show some finish blimishes there and no where else.

Corey:

Thankfully, there is no sign of holster wear on 132. I attribute that, believe it or not, to Renaissance Wax:

http://www.picreator.co.uk/articles/3_renaissance_wax.htm

About once each week, both the R9 and whatever holster I am using are given a light coat of Rennaisance Wax and buffed with a soft cloth. Ballistol and SuperLube preserve the internals and Renaissance Wax protects the outside. In fact, I wax all of my guns. Obsessive? Perhaps. Effective? Absolutely.   8)

Corey:

Then here is a link to the U. S. distributor's web page -- and you will note that Renaissance Wax is used by the NRA Museum for its collection of firearms:

I purchased a can of that awhile back and will affirm everything you say about it. My wife bought an antique box last week. I worked it over with Renaissance and she said what did you put on that.
