Issues after a new recoil spring?
« on: April 04, 2010, 01:24:32 PM »
Took my R9 out for the first time this weekend after installing a new recoil spring after the recommended 200 rounds... had 3 stovepipes in the first mag. Second mag had one stovepipe, and I had no problems whatsoever after that. Is this a common thing? I'm guessing the spring just needed to loosen up a little bit, but... it definitely bothers me that I've been carrying for the past month with a gun waiting to malfunction.

Of course, it could also be that it's just picked up some dust in the last month and needed a good cleaning. Just thought I'd ask here and see if anyone's had similar issues with a fresh spring.

Forgot to mention, the ammo I was having trouble with was Gold Dot 115 gr.

I haven't heard of that one but you make an excellent point to take it to the range when anything changes before it is carried for self-defense.

That's a new one on me.  Sorry you had the problem and glad it cleared up.

Assuming that you were using a firm grip when firing (no so-called "limp wristing"), if the pistol had been carried for a month without a clean and lube, that might well have caused the problem. I try to clean my R9 every couple of weeks or so whether it has been fired or not. Pocket "dreck" can be a real b**** in a pistol with tolerances as tight as those of the R9.

Good luck!

That's a good thought about cleaning every couple of weeks regardless of going to the range. I'll try to start doing that, and hopefully there won't be any more issues.

nase, that's not normal to have problems after putting in a new recoil spring. Richard seems to have it right. You could take the pup out ever 2-4 weeks and shoot a couple of mags, clean it and continue carrying.  Tom

I try to clean mine on a somewhat regular basis even if it has not been fired, but unfortunately time seems to slip by and I have let it go for extended periods of time.

I usually have it with me in a pocket holster, and have not had any malfunctions when I do get around to shooting it.

However, I am definitely going to try to increase the frequency of cleanings.
