bullet weight question
« on: November 20, 2009, 12:23:30 PM »
With all the ammo info that has been posted, there is one subject that hasn't been addressed much. No one ever seems to mention bullet weight. In 9mm the three most popular are 115,124 and 147 gr. So which is best for my pups? I have an r-380 also but there is much less to pick and choose from there. I have a lot of GD hp in 115 gr and 6 boxes of 115 gr silvertip that I picked up at a gun show. ( I'm still sore after that transaction!) So please help me out     gene

Gene.  I started with Winchester 115 gr. Silvertips and have never had a problem of any kind.  I have had my R9 since March '09 and stocked up on the Silvertips before they became scarce and recently found 12 more boxes.

I have enough now that I probably won't ever have to get any more as I shoot the R9 very little.  Performance is great.

I did get some Gold Dots 115 gr. as they were recommended here on the Forum, also, when I got the R9.  Never have tried them, due to the great performance of the Silvertips, just keeping them for backup.

Some here like Golden Sabres 147 gr. and have had good results.  I also bought 2 boxes of these, but again, haven't tried them.

The best advice I can give is when you find what your R9 likes best, stick to it.  It just so happened, I didn't have to try anything else.

I have tested and found reliable in my R9S:  Winchester Silvertip 115 gr, Speer Gold Dot 115/124 gr, and Winchester Ranger RA9T 147 gr.  The Winchester white box 115 gr FMJ also works fine too.  Federal and Remington do NOT.  This is in my gun, your results may vary.

FYI, I have fired at least 50 rounds of each "approved" round in testing, and have fired well over 100 rounds of my current selection, the Ranger RA9T.

I have fired 115gr Silvertips, 115, 124, 147gr Gold Dots, Hornady 115gr Critical Defense, 115gr FMJ WWB, 147gr Federal Hydra Shock, 147gr SXT Winchester Ranger and Federal 115gr FMJ, all have preformed well with no issues in my pup. I carry the 115gr Hornady Critical Defense. But have been thinking of switching to the 147gr Winchester Rangers.

Winchester just released a small amount of Ranger RA9T 147 gr to it's distributors.  Now might be a good time to check around online, I've noted a few places with it "in stock" this week.  I finally received the case of RA9T that was backordered from OMB 4 months ago.

Gene, make your life simple. You already have some Silver Tip 115 and Gold Dot 115, try shooting both and see what you like best...then go with that. take it easy and enjoy getting to know your new pup.  Tom

Gene:

The posts above contain excellent information and advice.

Although I am one of those who have been using the 147-grain Golden Sabers in my R9 (being a member of the "bigger rock school of thought"), I'm phasing over to a 124-grain standard-pressure load in order to simplify my life. I usually have my R9 teamed up with my HK P7, and the P7's gas-delayed blowback locking system was designed for the 115/124-grain 9mm NATO round.

I'm a believer in making your life simple and easy.  Much more enjoyable that way.

I don't have any Black Talons left in 9mm, but as stated I have shot the 147gr SXT Winchester Ranger rounds, which are the closest thing to a Black Talon, and they worked fine in my pup.

How about Cor Bon Pow R Balls, has anyone tried them? Although I don't believe they're a +P round, would they be too hot?

Mark.  Haven't tried the Pow R Balls, but check this thread on Corbon ammo before you try it.  Read entire thread for all information.

Wow! Glad I asked the question!!! After I posted here, I looked into the 9mm Luger Pow R Balls a little more in depth and then realized they're a +P round, so that's a no go anyway. I do like the Pow R Ball round in other guns though.

I have some Silver Tips in the gun now and am off to the range to see how they function. Being my gun is hot off the line ( and hopefully refined more than the older guns ) , and you guys have done a lot of research into what works best, I don't think I'll have any issues.

Thanks so much for link.

I don't believe I have yet welcomed you to the Forum, so I do so now.

You're right about the collective research and experience available around this campfilre. After 5-1/2 years as a member here, I learn something new and useful just about every time I log on.

Thank you very much Richard and I couldn't agree with you more. There is a wealth of knowledge here.

I did find the Hornady Critical Defense 9mm Luger 115 Grain FTX in stock at Glen's Army/Navy Store online. Pretty hard to find. They seem very similar to the Pow R Balls, so I ordered a few boxes. When one spends a grand on a carry gun, one doesn't have the time to wait for Cor Bon to produce a round that has been in the wings for the better part of a year.
