I didn't notice that looking at the small pic on fle-bay, that is a little odd.

The grips in the picture are prototypes.
He made each side different to see which weave direction was preferable.

The grips that are being made are symetrical.
Both sides are identical.

He'll take a few picture of the new ones today or tomorow and I'll post them.

Good question.

I passed it along to the builder.

Answer from the builder:

"I'm not exactly sure what he means, since that is precisely what the Kevlar grips are. The gold is Kevlar and the dark color woven in with it is carbon fiber".

Maybe you can be more descriptive in your question?

Oh, I see now. I thought the black bands were just the way that light was hitting it. This would not be an unusual effect of this type of material. It's so hard to get the full effect of materials like this with a camera.
This type of stuff is always prettier in person.

I really like the look, it's just a tad too golden for my tastes. Maybe a less 'even' pattern could be woven.

Say.. every 3rd horizontal band is Kevlar, and the rest is carbon fiber? Is this a big deal to do?

Or perhaps enlarge the carbon fiber amounts in other ways for it to still be 'checkered' but with more carbon fiber and less kevlar?

Cap., welcome to the forum. The fabric he is using comes from the mfg. that way in sheets or rolls. The weave you are talking about would have to be made special and the cost would be very high if you could get it done.

I wasn't sure where in the manufacturing process the fabric is created, but it does make sense for it to be done where they are working with the individual strands.

Ah well, my hopes aren't dashed as both of these new grips are great looking and I'm sure they're leagues beyond fiberglass as far as looks are concerned.

Here's a question (and I can post it in another thread if desired): How has the 'glossiness' of these things held up?

(I realize that this is a new production by a new manufacturer).

I'm hoping that owners of carbon fiber gripped (from Rohrbaugh) R9's can answer this because I'm assuming the polishing/glossing process is the same both then and now.

Do the grips need polishing periodically to keep the glossiness glossy?

Say the word and I'll make a new thread if you don't want it here!

The grips fit pretty well (not perfectly though) and they look good. I didn't have to modify them to get them installed.. just mess with em for a bit (only on one side).

In a few spots some of the fibers are coming through the epoxy ever so slightly. I considered sending it back to you (its really only on one side) but decided they're custom so who cares?

The edges had some fibers sticking out that needed to be trimmed with nail clippers.

Here's what my stealth looks like with the Kevlar/CF grips:

Cap, the original CF grips frrom the factory are not glossy, so they need no polishing.

One thing about these CF grips is that they definately do nothing for being able to hold on the the lil pup.

It would be ideal if some texture (thinking ribs) could be added to the outside of these beautiful grips. Form and function!

I'd buy another set, and pay more, if that was done.

I"m pretty certain he'd be able to add the "ribs", but in order to do so, I'm fairly certain it would require adding some additional width to the grips.
And, most people who carry want the R9 as thin as possible.

I'll be happy to write the builder and pass on your suggestion.
