Is 9mm jhp in 145 grain bad to use in R9s?
« on: September 03, 2009, 12:11:10 AM »
I read that 9mm greater than 135 grain is not a good round to use--what is the reason and with the short barrel of r9s--is it bad to use this round?

Several members use 147 gr. with praise and confidence. Where did
you read about >135 gr.?

And the R9s can have particular favorites, or particular distaste for rounds.  So long as it is not +P, try it.

This guy gives no facts or scientific data.  Not even empirical data at best!  I'm open to listening.

I know the government agencies are big on the 147's or used to be.  One guy I know in one used to bring over his ammo that was six months old and give it to me.   But that was 10 years ago.

Maybe they switched?

I've never even had a hiccup with 147's.  Not that I'm pushing them.

In a little gun like the R9, I prefer lite loads like 115's/125's.

Why beat the gun up? or me for that matter?

That is a very interesting article by "Anonymous." I first read and copied it for my files a couple of years ago and consider it to be a valuable reference. Like Chuck Hawks, I also have an idea about the identity of "Anonymous." The writing style is telling. If I am correct, he is a talented (and very opinionated) gunsmith whose work I sincerely admire but with whose opinions I do not always agree. One of the areas of disagreement I have with him relates to the matter of 147-grain 9mm ammunition. However, if we all agreed with one another on everything, it would be a very boring world indeed.

Thank you, "tquieng," for posting the link.

If it functions flawlessly in the gun youre firing it in and you can shoot it accurately and have confidence in it, these are the most important factors to me. Any number of hits center of mass with 115gr, 124, 145 or 147gr goes farther towards ending the threat than an FTF, FTE or a miss because the gun doesn't function properly and you lack confidence because you can't shoot a particular round the "experts" say is best. Use what works for YOU.

I have made my comments many times in this forum regarding the 147 grain bullet, which is my preferred round. I do not have Richard's insights as to the identity of the writer, nor do I understand the origins of his prejudice.

With ammo shortage relief, I am going to look for 115 and 124 grain bullets. If they cycle as flawlessly through my R9 as the 147 grain round, I will expand my horizons but I am not dumping the 147 JHP anytime soon.

Teddy is one of the best gunsmiths on the planet, imnsho, but he is semi-retired and does not work full time. He only does trigger action work on a limited basis.
