Could not wait any longer
« on: June 18, 2009, 08:33:49 PM »
I have been lurking around this fourm for quite some time reading and learning about the Rohrbaugh line of firearms.....I have been interested in a pocket carry piece for some time and decided Rohrbaugh was the way to go due to the quality of the workmanship......I have gone to various fire arms dealers and looked at and handled all of the various pocket carry pistols available.....So I orderd a new R9s Stealth from Tom about 4 weeks ago. But today I could not wait any longer and was the winning bidder  for the Farmingdale R9s with the blue CF grips on gunbroker.com.    I have already purchased various food items for the pups in the form of Speer Gold dots and Hornady Crtical Defense ammo. I am now looking for a leash for the pups and want some ideas on holsters.....Have looked at the Graham, Mecco, and various kydex pocket holsters (I currently carry a 9mm compact using IWB kydex) does anyone have any suggestions as to additional holster options for the new pups that are to arrive soon?
Beware the man with a well worn gun....he likely knows how to use it.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on both!!  I have a Mecco front pocket holster, black, with full stitching and really like it.  Robert does great work.   :)    :)

Congrats on the Farmingdale.  I was one of the ones watching in the last few moments to see how high it would go.  It went fairly high but I feel you got LOTS of gun for the money!!!  Those Blue Carbon Fiber grips are worth a couple hundred bucks alone.   Let me recomend NOT putting your farmie in any type kydex.  Please dont do it!  Those things eat up the finish and it would be ashame for any more ware to the gun than necessary.  Meco makes a GREAT holster along with Hidden Holsters.  If by chance you ever see a Hedley for sale BUY IT!

Welcome to the forum also.

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on winning that auction! You've got a real prize there in that Farmingdale with blue CF panels.

As for a holster, both K&D and Meco are strong supporters of the Forum and offer a range of superb holsters for the R9. Without intending to offend anyone with opposing views,  I personally would not consider carrying my Farmingdale R9 in a holster made of KYDEX®. Apart from the aspect of wear to the finish of the pistol over time, to quote a comment once made by another member of the Forum, "Plastic's got no soul." I save "plastic" holsters for "plastic" guns.

Welcome and Congrats, The Meco holster is my pups pocket home and for IWB I have a D.M. Bullard, David does a great job and makes a fine holster. I will post a pic of it later.

Thank you everyone for your holster input and thank you for your welcome.... One question....i see finger push and thumb push on several of the finer leather holsters.....what are the benefts of each? I would think starting the draw while still concealed in the pocket is a good idea and will assit in keeping the holster  in the pocket during the draw. Having never drawn from a pocket I am not sure which is easier or more effective with trainning the thumb or index finger push?

Another option.  It's a Pocket Softie by Mitch Rosen.   It 'ain't cheap ($120 natural/$140 black) but it's soft and comfy.  http://www.mitchrosen.com/product_line/holsters/pocket_holsters/body_pocket_holsters.html

The whole thing is smooth leather.  The side facing away from your leg has an additional very thin layer of neoprene topped by suede which helps it "stick" to the inside of your pocket and makes it soft and comfy.  The one in the pictures below is a month old.  I've had another one for three years, for my 340-PD revolver, carried daily (until I got the R9), and it still looks like new.  It's going to last a long time.  The guy does good work.

It is entirely a matter of personal preference, but I prefer a thumb push on a front-pocket holster. However, I frequently use a so-called "back-pocket" holster in the front pocket when wearing dress slacks. The full counter-print panel prevents "printing" of the pistol's shape.

Whatever pocket holster type you select, with practice its use will soon become second nature for you.

Good luck, and stay safe.

Here are the pics of my Meco pocket holster and
D.M. Bullard IWB holster, and I have the mini scabbard (#019) I purchased from the Rohrbaugh store.

Welcome to the forum. I paid a lot of money for an early R9 on gunbroker two months ago. While it does have CF grips it wasn't a Farmingdale.

I sold my Farmingdale 2 years ago and regretted it, as others have on this forum.

To me, one tone/ CF grip Farmingdale R9 is the ultimate gun.

Can't help you with pocket holster as I never use one but the DeSantis 086 (which is featured on the Rohrbaugh website), works great for me.

During summer months I have a holster that looks like a small camera bag only it goes "bang" instead of "click".
