Which tools are needed to field strip?
« on: April 29, 2009, 10:13:02 PM »
I have a new P9S stealth on it's way and I see that some tools would help the take down process. Which tools should I buy and where should I buy them from? I would also like to know where I can buy the mag extentions? Also, I read where you need to replace a spring after every 100 rounds, is this right? Is there any other parts I need to order to have ready? Thanks

Well, it depends on the gun.

Some, like mine, can be taken apart with nothing more than a toothpick.  Others have reported their pin is tight enough to require a punch to tap it out.

Follow the factory instructions to get the slide aligned with the pin.  Some use a special spacer tool or the handle of a toothbrush to hold the slide in proper alignment.  I can see that if your pin is tight and you have to tap it out, but if it's loose enough to simply push out you don't need anything special.  You'll learn to keep your finger away from the breach on the first attempt.  :o

About the only tool you should keep handy is a 1/16 allen.  That will come in handy of your grip screws start to come loose.  It also eliminates the need for the toothpick!  :)

Oh yeah, mag extensions.  IDM made them in aluminum, however they have been out of stock for quite some time.  There are a couple threads on the forum about using Pearce extensions.  They're actually pretty close, but not quite close enough for my taste.  In another thread someone made a brass shim to make them fit better.  I just feel funny adding an exposed plastic part to my generally plastic-free pup.

Bowhunter2001:

Welcome to the Forum, and congratgulations on selecting the R9.

As for takedown tools, some owners require none while others, such as myself, are always looking for an edge:   8)

I ended up using the end of a coat hanger today to take the pin out.  Worked perfectly and was just about the perfect size.
