OK, I feel left behind here, I have even asked Eric Rohrbaugh. I know I am going to feel the fool here, but why are our cool little R9 pocket poppers called "pups" on this forum?
OK, I will wait for the laughing to subside.

I'm thinking that the thought progression was something simple, and perhaps refers to small puppies that bite.
The R9 is definitely a small puppy that will bite.
I also like the clever one that plays on "The mouse that roared" and morphs into "The pup that Rohrs".

Chris ("R9SCarry"), the author of the R9 FAQ Sheet which is linked to the Forum, came up with the "Pup" nickname and it stuck. I think he was using the nickname to differentiate the R9 from some of the "Big Dogs" in his kennel. (To Chris, the .44 Magnum is a modest caliber. )
