One in the chamber carry
« on: May 05, 2008, 06:58:57 PM »
I've carried 4 different pistols over the years.
Barreta .25, then I upgraded to a Colt Pony .380.
I traded in the Pony for a lighter Kel Tec .380.
Now I'm packin the big gun R9S.
I've always carried with one in the chamber.
I don't want to have to rack a round in a high stress situation.
Is there any way this R9S will fire unless I pull the trigger?
I always carry in my rear jeans pocket.
So I'm sitting on the thing allot.

I don't think there is any way the R9 will fire unless the trigger is pulled or pushed. But I would never carry it in my pocket without it being in a holster.  Any number of things could happen that could snag the trigger as you pocket or draw the gun, especially in a high stress situation.

Hi,  I have always carried my R9S in my front right pocket with one in the chamber.  The only negative is a very slow draw while sitting down.  Cheers....Tak

Can the gun go off with one in the chamber if no one pulls the trigger?
Can the hammer be forced forward?
Can it go off by sitting on it?
Sorry if these seem like stupid questions, but then I'm no gun smith.

 My$.02:
No

There are no stupid questions.
IMHO, the R9 was made for back pocket wear. ALWAYS in a proper fitting holster.

I always carry my R9 holstered with a round in the chamber.   The trigger is completely protected by the holster. I consider it to be absolutely safe to do so.

Exactly. But carried directly in the pocket without a holster and with a round in the chamber is an accident waiting to happen in my opinion.

Why?
What could happen differently than with a holster?
Is inserting and removal the issue?

When you have a gun going in/out of pocket without something covering the trigger area-you ALWAYS have a chance of a discharge unintended!! :(

A proper pocket holster solves any potential problems!! ;)

Yes. In a moment of distraction or in a high stress situation you could inadvertantly grab the trigger when withdrawing the gun or the trigger could snag on something when inserting the gun. The primary purpose of a pocket holster is to cover up the trigger.

Do they make a holster that will hold the R9s and fit in most rear pockets of jeans?

There are several makers that have rear pocket holsters for the R9.  The pocket needs to be deep enought to close at top so no one can see in.  I have a Hedley R9 rear pocket that works very well in my jeans (size 38).

Hi Guys,
I do carry my R9s in a K&D holster.  Thanks for the clarification.  Cheers,  Tak
