Walmart and the 2nd Amendment
« on: April 19, 2008, 10:54:29 AM »
I just read the following from an NRA email:

Quote:
Friday, April 18, 2008

Recently, Wal-Mart joined New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg at a gathering of Bloomberg’s anti-gun group, Mayors Against Illegal Guns, to announce a series of changes to the way in which Wal-Mart handles firearm transactions. At the press event, J.P. Suarez, chief compliance officer for Wal-Mart Stores Inc., said: “The costs are, we think, part of what it takes to be responsible.” Suarez also added, "This is not a signal that we're getting out of firearms."

Once these changes are up and running, firearm purchases at Wal-Mart will involve a video record of the sale, which the store will keep on file -- effectively creating a video database of gun purchasers.  In addition, Wal-Mart announced that its employees will be given discretion to deny firearms purchases to anyone who has had a firearm traced by BATFE for any reason -- including those who have had a firearm stolen and later used in criminal activity.

Wayne LaPierre, NRA Executive Vice President, said, “I view it as a public relations stunt that stigmatizes law-abiding firearms purchasers exercising their constitutional freedoms. I honestly think it's a corporation trying to curry favor with politicians as opposed to doing anything meaningful about stopping crime.”  Unquote.

We may all want to rethink whether we support ammunition (or other gun sales) from Walmart.

I'm not really a Walmart fan and would like to stop using them altogether but they have succeeded in driving out most small-town competitors that we're almost forced to shop there now.

They do have the best price in this area for WWB but after this last stunt I think I'm going to have to set my 9mm toolhead back up for my 550B..........haven't reloaded 9 in years since it was so inexpensive.........oh, well.  >:(

to hell with Walmart, all they do here is play Mexician music in the store and give everyone a bad time. the son in law, who runs the company, needs to learn he's not god's gift to the world. Tom

Walmart definately has made interesting decision with regards to pharmacist compensation, part-time employees and gun policy.

We have to decide if their decisions conflict with our personal beliefs and make the appropriate decisions.

One aspect that continued to work for them is volume purchasing and the ability to pass the low price onto the consumer.  Comparison price shopping aith other stores for ammo is interesting.

I accidentally bought a cheap chase lounge chair for the beach today at Wally World.  Had I read this before hand, I wouldn't have.  I now have absolutely NO reason to ever go to walmart again, pending an emergency or something.  Target doesn't sell cheap beach chairs or I wouldn't have gone in today.  I hate walmart...they s#ck.   They should just get rid of the sporting goods department...can't find anybody there anyway.  I used to go for ammo, but now that they'll probably record this transaction, forget it.   I think sports authority also tracks ammo purchases (they did in the FL town I used to live in).  I bought a box and left.  I should have just left.

I do NOT know what people don't understand about the 2nd amendment.  Go look at the PA constitution...it's more concise about the right to DEFEND oneself and keep guns.    Being that it was written before the US Constitution and the Constitution was signed in Philly, I think people are stupid to not recognize this as a fundamental right of every US citizen.

We probably won't have much influence over Walmart as a whole.  But we can maintain important moral victories if we do not buy sporting goods from them.  I personally choose to support my local gun dealers, even though their prices for some things may be (necessarily due to smaller volumes) higher.  We must do this if we want them to stay in business... which requires that they stay successful.

It's to our advantage.  It's to America's advantage.

Yeah, I figured somebody would bust me on that.  However, at least Target, to my knowledge, never sold guns or ammo; so they're at least standing by some principle and not taking away something just because it's PC - they've always had that policy.  Walmart is now pandering to the PC crowd.  I'd also venture a guess to say more folks are mugged at Walmart, necessitating the need for them to carry ammo for their customers ;D

Now I will say Target has really cut back on motor oil too.  Probably because if you sell over "x" amount you have to have a disposal dump.

I've quit patronizing Wal-Mart altogether. Old Sam Walton wouldn't even recognize the corporation and its management practices these days. Not only has Wal-Mart managed to undercut and drive out of business a number of local merchants here in my part of the country but also they sell a lot of imported sweat-shop merchandise from countries this old "Cold Warrior" still has difficulty accepting as legitimate trading partners. The company's alliance with the Bloomberg coalition is just another reason for my personal boycott of the outfit.
