Newbie Questions
« on: March 26, 2008, 01:31:59 PM »
Hi.  I'm new to the Forum and am becoming VERY interested in owning a Rohrbaugh.  Two questions:  The Elite as I see it on Rohrbaugh's web site has the sides of the slide sanded giving it a silver (two tone) finish.  The pictures I've seen on the Forum show a black finish to the slide.  If it is black, then what is the difference between it and the Stealth?  Second question is the manual recomends replacing the recoil spring every 100 rounds.  (similiar to the Seecamp)  How many users do this?  Does that limit your range time to 100 rounds?  I now have a Kahr PM9 that I like and carry.  It has given me no problems.  I also have a Glock 26 that I will sell to help fund the Rohrbaugh.  Not really designed for the pocket.  Thanks for your help and guidance.  Oh yes,  Where is the best way to purchase a Rohrbaugh.  I don't see any local gun shops listed as a dealer.  I'm in SE PA.

As far as 100 rounds at the range, the R9 is no range gun. I've taken mine to the range twice. First time to ensure that it functioned with the ammo I carry, I shot 35 rounds. The second time was to check function after pocket carry with no maintenance after three weeks, 7 rounds fired. The R9 was designed for carry a lot, shoot a little.

The Irish Guard, a member here can hook you up with a Rohrbaugh.

I'm not schooled enough on the Elite to tell you the difference. I think the Elite has the Kimber Eclipse style finish and the parts may be handfitted with more care than the Stealth. It's the Stealth that has the black slide.

BTW- I bought my Stealth only five weeks ago. I'm very pleased with my purchase. I've carried it in my front pocket since shooting it for the first time.

Welcome,

Current recomendations for the recoil springs is 200 to 250 rounds. IIRC I had 206 rounds on mine when I changed it.

As Jack said, The Irish Guard can hook you up, or if you want to deal in person, call Rohrbaugh and ask if there is a dealer in your area. The dealer I got my R9 from was not, and I just checked, is still not listed on the Rohrbaugh website, yet a dealer he is.

EMT, I too am a new member, so feel a bit odd welcoming you to the group, but... welcome! The reason I chime in is that you and I apparently have some things in common... I too am in SE PA, I have another brand of pocket gun (Ruger LCP) and am VERY interested in owning a Rohrbaugh. If you are interested in comparing notes. please send me a private message through the forum.

Here are a couple of thoughts that may help you...
1- There is a dealer listed on the Rohrbaugh website who is based in Topton, PA... The Handgunner Custom Gunshop.
I contacted them and spoke with a guy named Jeff. He did everything he could to talk me out of a Rohrbaugh and into a Kel-Tec or Sccy. He even said a Rohrbaugh is not a pocket gun because it is too heavy. I told him they are 12.8 oz w/o a magazine, and he told me they are heavier than that. He is either a liar, or quite uninformed. Anyway, I called Maria at Rohrbaugh and told her of my experience with this dealer, so hopefully they will remove them from the website soon.
2- Maria told me they would be happy to work directly with my local gun shop to send the gun out. My local shop in New Holland, PA is willing to act as the delivery point, but have NO interest in carrying or supporting Rohrbaugh products (seemed a bit short sighted to me, but I suppose they have their reasons)
3- I have not had the opportunity to even hold a Rohrbaugh, let alone shoot one. Perhaps you and I could find some kind soul somewhere in the Northeast who would let us try our hand at theirs. If it is helpful, and we can work out the logistics, I am willing to fly us in my Cessna to an airport local to such a Rohrbaugh owner, where they would have to agree to pick us up and take us to their range.

PS. If there is a Rohrbaugh owner in NE USA, and would be willing to pick up me (and perhaps EMT) at your local airport, and take us to your range to fire your Rohrbaugh, that would at least be worth dinner ;D

EMT and I have communicated... are there any takers out there in the Northeast who would be willing to pick us up at your local airport, drive us to your range, and allow us to try out your Rohrbaugh?

Hopefully in:
Eastern PA, NJ, MD, DE, VA, or Eastern NY

Thanks,

EMT, I have noticed that some photos of the Elite look like the sides are black (perhaps because of reflections or less than favorable lighting), but they are shiny Stainless Steel on the sides. See these excellent photos of DDGator's Elite:

The slide on the Stealth is all black. See the photo of R2224 in this thread:

Note the contrast with R2225 pictured right below it.

Thanks Click.

That really helps to clarify it.  The pics I saw of the Elite made the slide sides look black.  Now I just have to decide on which one I want.  Hmmm....  maybe one of each if I don't mind loosing the wife.

I would like to understand the history of the recoil spring replacement.

What is the source of the "200 to 250 rounds" recommendation, since the instruction manual available online recommends replacement every 100 rounds?

How many times has Rohrbaugh changed the recommended replacement cycle? Has it gone up or down each time?

Thanks,

When I ordered replacement springs from Rohrbaugh, Maria told me that the new springs are good for 200 to 250 rounds.
