Back in October, I wrote regarding a problem I was having with the Magazine popping out on the first round when loaded 6+1. Erich suggested a change in grip, and Calvin suggested it was thinning lube. Well, I just got around to shooting it for the first time since October, sad to say (I have too many hobbies), and thought I would provide some feedback.
I do not think it is a lube problem, as the first three magazines popped even though I had lubed exaclty according to directions, with Super Lube.
Next, I started playing with my grip. When any portion of my hand, whether it is my small finger, or the meaty portion of my left hand using erich's "thumb" grip technique, it did not pop. However, that seemed like chearing, having some portion of my hand hlolding it in, so I went back to my regular grip, and low and ebhold, I shot two mahgs without it popping. Unfortunately, I could not either make it pop, or not pop, consistently. After about 100 rounds, which is all my hand could take, (it was cold), the only thing I think I was doing different when there was no popping was to use a very firm grip with my hand rotated forward slightly more than usual, so that it is really crammed into the web of my hand, more like a grip on a S&W stubby revolver than say a .45 auto. Maybe it is the slight additional rotation (and I am not talking about limp wristing, which I proved caused other problems, i.e., FTF), that makes a difference. I will have to experiment some more, but I did conclude that on my gun at least, it is not the thinning lube.
Again, it never happened on 5+1.
I would be interested to know whether the replacement of the magazine catch solves the problem. Hope to hear from some of you.
Thanks,
Brian
