Which Glock?
« on: January 06, 2006, 12:54:47 AM »
Hi Folks, I need some input please..  I'm considering buying a Glock 27 in 40 cal. or a Glock 26 in 9mm.  I would get the subcomtact model for easy conceal.  I have owned the 40 in the past and could shoot it quite well, however, it would require time to get back on target due to the snappy recoil..  I haven't shot the 26 but assume the recoil is more balanced.  The reason for the purchase would be to have a pistol I could shoot at the range and eat up ammo and also to give myself some extra punch over the pup.. while carrying..  Would you go with the 40cal. or the 9mm. with hotter loads then we can use in the pup?  I have seen some commercial ammo in 9mm. that isn't that far behind the 40 cal.....  Thanks for any ideas, I really appreciate it..  Your Friend,   Jim :)

I've had the 27 & 26! Still have the 26, got rid of the 27. I got a little antsy about reports of kabooms with the Glock 40's. I've got a G17,19,&26 all good shooters and accurate.
No matter how you struggle and strive, you will never get out of this world alive.

I've owned several Glocks - a 23, a 19, and a 17. I really don't care for the subcompact models at all. I think the 23 and 19 size is the way to go, especially if you're carrying the R9 as a back up. They're more comfortable to shoot and still quite concealable. And I prefer 9mm  or .45 over .40SW.
Really though, it's all personal preference and if you prefer the subcompact size, that's what you should get. Either caliber will do the trick - that's also personal preference.

I would go with the .40 if the slightly more snappy recoil isn't an issue for you.  Bigger heavier bullet works for me.  So, go with the 27 if you are determined to get the subcompact.

Otherwise I agree with harrydog, I would get either the 23 or 19 instead.  Most people I see with the 26 or 27 end up putting the pinky extension on the mag which makes it as long in the grip as the 23 and 19.  Since the grip is the part that is most worrisome concerning concealment that negates the advantage of the 26 and 27 sized glocks.  So, if you were going to put the pinky extension on I would say get the 19 or 23 instead.  No pinky extension get the 27.  Another thing that the compact glocks (23 and 19) have in their favor is the rail for a light/laser.  Maybe a consideration.

I've owned a pile of Glocks. All worked, but the only one that I still have is the G26.

I would get the 19 or the 26 in that order. Powerball works
great in the 19.

I agree, the 19 is a great choice.  9mm range ammo is cheap and grip length is just right.

I have not had the 27,but do have the 26 and like it a lot!!

Also the 19 and 17.. ;)

I personally carry the 26 with +2s,and I like the feel of it slightly over the 19 for IWB carry.. :)

It all is what works for each person when you narrow it down to a couple of choices I feel..

I followed the suggestion of a LEO friend and bought the 27.  We both are happy with our Glocks.

Thanks fellows, I really appreciate your input..  Let me throw another model in for consideration, the 36 in 45 cal.  1/4 in. longer than the 26 or 27, thin grip, single stack, and not much longer in the grip then either of the above mentioned pistols!!  My son is a P.O. and picked one up for back up and really likes it...  That would solve the problem of power and size at the same time..  Do any of you have experience with the 36???  Thanks again for your time.. :)  Jim

Jim,

I had a Glock 36 .45 Auto and enjoyed it.

Teddy Jacobson, the well known gunsmith, recommended either the Glock 36 or H&K USP Compact .45 if you want a small .45 Auto.

Mine was a little tricky to take apart.  I had the New York Trigger 1 installed, and that might have had some effect on takedown.  I don't know.  The trigger had to be manipulated to get things apart.

You will sometimes find adverse comments about them on the Glock forums.  They are not 100% admired by all.  Some of it is the 6 round capacity, of course.

I installed the Pierce +0 grip extension, and a Slug Plug to fill the hole.  It really didn't make that much difference to me, and I stopped using the Pierce.

The Glock is a great pistol.  If I had to do it again, I would try the H&K instead, and maybe skip the Compact version if my small hands could handle the regular USP .45.

Jim,

No personal experience with the 36 either, but I know of a couple people that carried them after they first came out..

I believe both now carry other guns though.

If I remember right they were a fairly "stout" shooters for them. But what is that way to one,may not be with others.. ;D

Good luck with your quest.. 8)

I have the 36 and like it very much; it,too, performs very
well with Corbon Powerball. I was pleasantly surprised how
accurate the gun is with most any ammo. Conversely, I was
quite disappointed with the 22; however, with 16 or 17 rounds, one can tolerate less accuracy.
Like Bill, I also bought the 36 on Teddy's recommendation.

I have a glock 23 and a glock 27 I have carried them both as bcak up /off duty waepons for 10 years with no problems. the caliber choice is just personal preference. The most importnat thing is to be comfortable with the gun you carry and practice, practice, practice! :)

I have a G27 and a G36.  I find myself carrying he G36 and have retired the G27 to the safe.  G36 feels better in my hand and also shoots better for me.  I also like .45ACP.
