Problem Racking Slide
« on: September 03, 2005, 08:09:47 PM »
I've been to the range a few times and have had a problem racking the slide for the first round.  It locks back, and I have to force it forward.  I have placed 6 rounds in the slide...either GD 115 or GD 124, it doesn't seem to matter.  What's really weird is the slide performs perfectly during firing; it always cycles properly and loads the next round.  I'm wondering if the mag spring is too strong for the 6th round, causing it to have problems releasing from the mag and getting up the feed ramp?  I can get the first round to chamber, but I have to force the slide forward, not just let it release on its own power.  I also feel some resistance during the forward push of the slide, as if it's catching on something.  When I do a takedown of the r9s for cleaning, I notice a slight "lip" just below the feed ramp.  Is this normal?  Considering the excellent tollerances of this firearm, I imagine this is normal, but I don't have anything to compare it to.

Thanks for your input. :)

PS - This firearm is the absolute perfect combination of personal protection and concealed carry.  My life as a CCW for 30 plus years has finally come to fruition!  Thank you Karl and others for this perfect solution!

When a semi-automatic pistol functions properly during firing but resists going to battery when manually charged, the problem can sometimes be traced to a need for additional lubrication -- particularly with a new pistol.  Have you noticed any evidence of friction between slide and frame?

May I suggest after you insert the magazine with six cartridges, rack the slide to load the first round into the chamber then remove the magazine and insert one more cartridge in the magazine to top it off once again and then see if you still have problems.  It appears from your writing you may be just having trouble when six rounds are in a magazine that is inserted into the firearm and this will help in troubleshooting.  Also pay careful attention as you load each individual cartridge into the magazine.  Please let us all know your findings.
