My R9 is a little different
« on: August 31, 2005, 09:43:11 PM »
Hello everyone ;D

I just picked up a used R9 this afternoon. The pistol was immaculate and only a handful of rounds were ever fired through it. After I got home, searched the net to see if I could get more info regarding this new pistol of mine. In doing so, I found that my R9 is not the same as all the other R9's that I have seen. My R9 has sites. I thought that only the R9s has sites on it.

On the right hand side of hte slide it says
Rohrbaugh R9

On the left hand side of the slide it says
Farmingdale, N.Y.

ETA: R9 has a black frame and the R9s has a Stainless frame, the "s" doesn't have anything to do with sites, or am I even more confused??

Thanks

CT, I may be even more confused than you are, but to the best of my knowledge, the R9S's have sights, but the slide still says "R9" (at least the older, Farmingdale ones).

My R9S has a black frame and a Farmingdale R9 slide.  Its s/n is R4xx and I bought it last Fall.

Mine is serial# R2XX, It has a black frame, farmingdale NY and R9 are on the slide and it has sites.

after checking the website is says in the brochure that the R9 has no sites and the R9s has sites.

The truly rare gun is an R9s with R9s on the slide...very few made -- something to do with ATF model/type approval, I believe.

All R9 and R9s current production have R9 on the slide.
I'm not a gun expert -- but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night...

Thanks for the clarification.

I just wanted to be sure that what I have is what I should have, if you know what I mean. ;D

Fly is correct.  Rohrbaugh only had permission to produce an R-9.  When they put R-9s on a few slides, it caused issues with the government.  So, now all models say R-9 only.

The "s" designation only indicates the gun has sights.  You have an R-9s.

Originally the guns were going to be offered with a choice of a silver frame or a gray frame.  Ultimatley there were problems with the silver finish and it was dropped.  A lucky few people have the silver frames.  I personally like the two-tone better, but the silver ones are a rare bird and would be nice to have.

Additionally, the grips recently changed from a blue carbon fiber to a black, so the blue will eventually be harder to find.

Finally, the "gray" frame color has changed a bit over time -- there are different shades if you will.

Somebody needs to write all this down so we remember later!  ;D

My #1 R9s is in fact a very early one - so it is silver frame, blue grips and has ''s'' on the slide.  Farmingdale too of course.  That was circa early 2004.

Much later in 2004 #2 came along - now without ''s'' on slide, still Farmingdale, still blue grips (among last of those then IIRC) and frame is actually very dark gray.  I think now the frame is more black.

What comes out now and onwards will I think - if all old frames and slides used - be the black frame, black grips, no ''s'' as that was dropped some while back now and on slide will be Deer Park - I think that's right.

New Gun parts are new gun parts...    Frames are made and  Serial Numbers are stamped on, these are sent out for the Anodize Finish.  If the finish is not acceptable, frame goes back to Anodize vendor, to be re-done.  This is how the Serial numbers got out of sequence.  Then the R9 or R9s marking was changed to  ...... I forget, but only one of these was to be used [BATF problem].    Then the Address marking changed,  You now have a posibility of a Low Serial number  R9 or  R9s marking,  and a new address.

I may not have this just pight, but it's something like this..

My R9s, serial #128, has "Rohrbaugh R9s" in Old English font on right front of silver slide.  Serial # is stamped on frame just below.  "Farmingdale, N.Y." stamped on left side of slide.  Dark frame (mine seems to have a bit of purple in the dark gray) with the blue carbon fiber grip panels.   If I understand the numbering, mine was the 28th piece off the line.  Had to send it back once for FTE problems: it needed a stronger extractor spring, which solved the problem.
