This is my very first post here and I am new as a newbie can be so bearing my soul like this is kinda awkward, but I am torn between the R9 and the R9S.

I have owned small semis before (my fav was the Pocket Nine by Detonics- never should have let that go , )but now I am going to rectify all that by purchasing (it's already ordered) a R9. Problem is; Do I want the -S? Should I try to change my order while I await my turn for delivery??

Opinions? Comments??

Get the R9S.  It's not like the sights will get in the way or anything should you choose not to use them.

While I own the R9s, if you have already ordered the R9 I would stay with it.  The sights on the R9s are serviceable in comparison with the factory sights on one of the NAA Guardians, but they are nonethess quite small.  The Rohrbaughs were designed essentially for up-close-and-personal self-defense work.  Also, unless my eyes deceive me, the pistol which Karl Rohrbaugh is holding on the company's web site has no sights.  Judge for yourself: http://www.rohrbaughfirearms.com/contact/contct_set.html   -- then hit the "Click For More" link in the "In the News" section on the right side of the page.

Skyhook - welcome from me too dude!  

I have 2 R9's versions but ya know - in truth - I really do not think I'd miss the sights badly.  Heck, with my old eyes they are hard to use anyways.  I would fully expect to be hitting every bit as well at combat ranges, without as well as with.

Your answer??  Don't fret - you'll not be disadvantaged IMo one bit.  This lil fella is very pointable and once you have mastered the grip method that suits you it'll do all you want.

This has been discussed around here before, and the general consensus is that there is no real disadvantage to having the sights and that they will better allow you to take full advantage of the capabilities of this little gun.

I think the vast majority of the guns sold are "s" models.

HOWEVER, the guns carried by Karl and Eric are "sightless" R-9 pistols.  I actually shot Eric's when I was at the factory.  Karl did not believe sights were necessary on this gun.  The only reason they have an R-9s is that customers demanded it.

Oh, by the way, the gun Karl is holding on the website is an early prototype R-9 with the CNC'ed aluminum grip panels!

There is still a set or two of those floating around in a safe at the factory!

I do think I'll just sit back and let the 'nekked nine' come in sans sights. Think of the weight-saving, eh??

You can't go wrong either way!  

Like I said, Karl and Eric don't understand the whole "sights" thing.  The only thing they understand even less is the desire for night sights!

I have the S version and shoot it better than I do a Seecamp 32-in part, because of the front sight. I think that the S is better if you want to shoot holes in paper at longer ranges than combat. However, given the recoil, the R9 is not my favorite range gun.

So, in a real world scenario, a sight-less model will be just fine.

Skyhook, Welcome to the forum. Have fun checking out all the good info here. The R9 is designed as a last ditch defence gun. So with that in mind, sights are not needed. However, the sights are small and will not hold up your draw. Most of my customers want and have the sighted version. They like it better for range shooting. Get comfortable and enjoy the wait with this forum. Its worth it!       Regards, Tom

Thanks, Tom. I intend to do routine, daily, 'drive-bys' here to keep tabs on all the latest news & developments.

From what I have read so far, this is one of the friendliest, most informative groups I have encountered. I do belong to several other gun-oriented forums (fora?), and have seen some pretty raw behavior at a few. None of that here, though.
