R9s weight (vs. P3AT)
« on: February 17, 2005, 12:55:38 AM »
You guys have fed the monster in me; the one with the never-ending hunger for the perfect pocket carry.

I currently carry a P3AT 365 days a year. 90% of the time it is a front-pocket carry with no pocket holster (sorry RJ).

Having full confidence in the reliability of my P3AT, my second biggest consideration is weight.

I think I am looking at moving from a 10 oz carry (loaded P3AT) to a 15 oz carry + one of RJ's pocket holster (to better manage the weight and position in the pocket).

I would really like to hear from those that have had experience with both of these carry scenarios.

I know that 5-10 oz. does not sound like a lot, but when you carry all day every day ... it seems like it could be. And no, 9mil.mouse, I do not want to carry one on each side to balance the load! ;D

Thanks

ezeg,

I got a phone call from your pocket last night and it is sick and tired of having to haul that ugly gun around and it really wants you to start carrying the R9. Hey, pockets have feelings too! ;D

RJ,

The quote you cited in your post does not belong to me.

PCA, I will definitely give you the "looks" factor. These R9's are kinda ... Sexy. 8)  Just don't start talking about my old 1911 ... beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

RJ, thanks for the holster info. So; I think I am comparing a 10oz (loaded P3AT) to a 16oz (loaded R9 with holster) ... Not as big a difference as I thought.

Cheers

ezeg,

I sold the majority of my collection of guns 4 years ago but I held onto (4) 1911's which include a US Property (World War I) 1911 and a 1950 National Match in excellent condition, original box.

The R9 is sexier and in the event of (God forbid) need to use a gun, prosecutor will have a field day with single action 1911, whereas the R9 is DAO.

I concur that a leather pocket holster is about an ounce.

I think you will be amazed at how much easier (not to mention safer) it is to carry a gun in a quality pocket holster.  The weight could be a factor in certain types of thin dress slacks -- it all depends upon the pants.  I have certain pants that will carry an NAA mini-revolver no problem, but bulge with the R-9.  Doesn't mean it isn't concealed -- it just depends on the environment you are in.

I got rid of my P-3AT when the R-9 arrived.  The slight addition in weight is well worth the improvement in quality, firepower, and trigger pull.

ezeg,

Why did you refer to P3AT as 1911? Am I getting this wrong too? I can only make so many mistakes daily and I am over my quota.

PCA, I was just trying to build on your humor: it is ok (with me) if you call my P3AT ugly. I just meant to imply that if you start calling my other true love (my 1911) ugly ... you might cross the line (with me). ;D

1911's are (arguably) considered ugly to many people. But in my experience (as an ex-peace officer and competitive shooter), I have never been so endeared to a particular firearm.

I am just not very good at being funny. :'(

DDGator, thanks for your input. Most of my front-pocket carry days are in bluejeans. I think I will order my R9 today.

Cheers!

Jeans to me, so long as the cut is not too tight to get your hand in fully, are a very easy pocket carry.  I carry my R-9 in jeans with no problem at all.

ezeg,

I understand your comments about 1911. If you did not guess, I venerate the 1911, particularly military ones.

Good news! Jeans are not illegal in New Jersey! It's just carrying an R9 or any other handgun that is illegal.

Duane: Working on the new website?

I'm off to Vermont and will not be corresponding for a few days. Cell phone doesn't work and laptop not allowed.

PCA,

I tried  www.newjerseysucks.com and www.newjerseyblows.com -- but they were both taken...  ::)
