Trip To the Range
« on: January 16, 2005, 07:54:07 PM »
Ok, weather here in Florida was kind of "rainy" so I grab my R9 and decided to head too the range to see what this "wonder-gun" could do. I fed it a diet of 100 winchester ball, 17 old hydrashock 124 grain, and for dessert it ate about 25 old "magsafe defender loads". I had two stove pipes which was my fault for limp wristing the gun.......everything else went thru without a problem. Recoil on trhe magsafe is pretty tough on the wrist but this is a defense load not a range load. I have not found any problems at all, just the gun is a "handfull" even though I amm 6ft 1in 240 lbs with large hands. I was basically shooting at 15-20 ft and I had 2-3inch groups.! Took it home broke it down . but just too slide off, cleaned barrell, slide and anything I could get too witout taking the grips off. I did not get my super lube yet, so just coated everything with "miltec" till it arrives. Also till I get a holster from rohrbaugh's store I thru it in a "Desantis Nemisis" holster and it works like a charm, If you have never tgried this hiolster yet look into it.. If anyone has more feedback about what they are using for "carry ammo" I would love to get some feedback, also am I safe just using the miltec till the "super lube" arrives.........Stay safe!! Dan

Dan,

Sounds like a great experience -- and yes, the weather was lousy.  I think most people here are using the Speer Gold Dots in 115g or 124g variety.  This is sort of the unofficial factory recommended load.

I realize this but magsafe seems so much more logical, plus it keeps the weright down , ordered a bunch of superlube today, so we can keep the "wonder properly greased".. what size are the new grip screws??..

Why do you say that Magsafe seems more logical?

I would imagine that the weight difference -- even for 7 rounds -- is fairly small, isn't it?

I haven't calculated the difference but with 6+1 of Gold Dots the all up weight is close to 17 ounces - I don't think weight saving really an issue, tho I can believe the Magsafe if reliable functionally is probably a good carry defence choice.  I have yet to evaluate it - or afford it!

Grip screws ... well I drew up the type I have and it's posted somewhere on the forum but - here it is again - IIRC apart from better material now -  still the same thread etc.

BTW - IMO no need at all to remove grips every field strip - just not necessary..... but ensure the right side screws do not loosen over time.... Eric recommends Loctiting.

Odd - pic does not seem to be coming up ... ahh - there it is...

I moved here from New York to get out of the cold, For business I travel to Vermont and Mass a lot, so I do know how cold it has been. I have been so use to carrying the "32 SeeCamp) in florida with magsafe for so many years, so I am very use to the ammo and weight of the gun, this is the reason I prefer magsafe in the R9, in shorts most of the time, so trying to keep the weight down, also I spoke to Eric today, he is sending me new screws, they are "allen screws" improved  but not a "Torx" as I read in one of the threads. Also ordered the pocket carry limited holster in "elephant" from him , which he said was an awesome looking holster, by the way the "Desantis nemesis holster is an awesome low-end but very functional holster. last but least I ordered purple loc-tite, and super lube today so it should arrive by the end of the week and I can grease up the "rocket", has anyone had a problem with dust getting accumulated in the gun from the grease???thx..Dan ::) ;D

Dan ... the pic I wanted to have showing for you above didn't come thru - initially - now it has.

Dust?  Not really - some lint does gather here and there but there are so few points of ingress that routine strip, clean and lube will take care of that.  It is worth tho - ''de-linting'' a pocket to be used for carry IMO - surprising what gathers!

Geminidan: Where in Vermont do you travel? Vermont is the only state in the US that entitles all citizens the right to carry without need of CCW permit. I get to carry in Vermont while my native state of NJ says 'no'.

Hi Dan,

Thanks for the range report. I have been lubricating my R9S with Militec 1 since the first time I cleaned it and saw all the heavy white grease the factory put in it and the dirt it appeared to have collected when I fired it. I haven't been having any problems with the Militec 1. I carry the gun with the Speer 115 grain gold dots which seem to work the best in my gun.

Frank.here is a question, what about using miltec-grease instead of the Super lube, and just use the miltec oil in the other spots??? Do you think the gun will not function?? also Eric says the gun needs "super Lube" is there anyone besides us using miltec?? and is there any ramifications if we do not use super lube??? ::) also where are you finding the ammo???.Dan

Can't speak to the lubrication question but ammoman.com still has bulk Speer Gold Dot 115s for $179 per thousand.

I spoke to Eric today and asked him about the blueish color in my grips, he said they were carbon fiber, and they are collectible now, since the new black grips are more silver and black, so I ordered a set and will make my decision when they arrive. Has anyone have a long term test with just using "MILTEC1" and also any problems with anything say after shooting at least 500 rounds?Dan
