Product announcement
« on: December 02, 2006, 06:20:01 PM »
Well I got the product announcement for the R380 in the mail today.  I'll be at the SHOT show so I'll be by with my camera (I have a press pass) and snap some pictures.

The announcement didn't say when it will ship.

Cool!  So we'll have plenty of pictures then.  Or, we could just take the existing pictures and photoshop a 380 on the side ;)

I've got to say the R380 sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.  Should be out by the time I get out of the police academy.

At SHOT, Karl told me shooting a R380 feels like shooting a .25, due to the locked breech design.  Should be interesting to rry one out.  Procy though, for a .380.  I was considering "trading down" one of my R9s for a R380, but that's an expensive proposition just to play.

Kel-Tek already has a small locked breech .380; the P-3AT.
Costs $250 or so and weights around 12 oz. Going to be a hard market to break into. I personally don't know many who would/could put down $900 + for a .380. It may be a high quality .380, but it is  still a .380.

They seem to be selling them like hotcakes.  I don't think that Kel-Tec and Rohrbaugh appeal to the same people.

Kel-Tec is going to be in an interesting position with their new bull-pup rifle -- we will see if people can wrap their heads around paying $2k plus for a Kel-Tec rifle.

If Seecamp can sell a 380 that routinely sells for $800+, then I don't see why Rohrbaugh can step into the same market.  Persobally I'd be willing to pay that much for either of them.  And plan to for at least one of them.

I'm inclined to think that there will be a real demand for the R380 in the export market, especially in certain foreign countries which restrict handguns of 9mm and above to police/military use. With all of the foreign gun companies selling their products on the U. S. market these days, it would be good to see one of our home-grown companies such as Rohrbaugh help redress the trade deficit.

I tend to disagree with that somewhat.  Having owned the P3AT, LCP, LWS-380 and looking to buy the R-380 as soon as they start shipping, There are many levels of quality and reliability that folks are willing to pay for.   8)
