"Guns in Bars" Now Over a Year Old, No Problems Reported
In July 2010, it became legal for [Tennessee] Handgun Carry Permit holders to wear their handgun into restaurants that serve alcohol. Of course, anti-gun rights media immediately tagged this law as the "Guns in Bars Bill" and predicted mass carnage throughout the state. Exactly what the law allowed was grossly distorted by the media, who claimed it would allow "anyone to carry their guns in bars". What the law DOES is allow a citizen with a valid Handgun Carry Permit to wear his gun into restaurants that serve alcohol, as long as the permit holder does not drink ANY amount of alcohol while armed. Drinking while armed is a serious crime, with penalties that include jail time, a hefty fine, and loss of the carry permit.
This law has now been in effect for over a year, and of course the bloodshed and mayhem the media predicted has not occurred. I have been unable to find a single incident in which a permit holder has caused any problem in any establishment that serves liquor. In Knox county, the Sheriff's Office there reported 61 incidents in the last year in busineses that sell alcohol. Not one of them involved a gun. According to Knox County Assistant Chief Deputy Rich Wilson, "This law has not changed our job one bit." Of course, when it comes to gun rights, the media can't be bothered with facts.[/size]
