Someguns
« on: August 22, 2011, 05:02:00 PM »
I am the widowed wife of Greyfeathers ( Bruce)-he passed Jan. 17th of this year. As many of you are probably aware he loved this forum but more than that he loved guns, all guns. Now I have all the guns, and I am wondering what does a girl do with all these guns? Sad to say he left me with a lot of toys, I have no idea what to do with. The only ones I will keep are the ones I used for concealed carry and my perazzi shotgun that I use for Trap shooting. He got me started in trap shooting, never shot a gun till I met him 20 years ago, and now trap shooting is in my blood. I still find it hard to talk out loud to the guys at the club about my gun collection, cause I start crying when I talk about him and I don't want them to think I'm some kinda of sissy, besides they get very uncomfortable.  Please Help

I'm so sorry for your loss.

Do you have a local  shop that will do the boxing and shipping for you?  Or maybe even a close friend of you husband that might help?  If so you could list what you have that you would like to sell here in the classifies with pictures and I'm sure some interest would flair.  If like most men who are on a gun forum your husband was probably a member of several forums and you could copy and past to those also.

Again, I'm so sorry for your loss.

I know they are all registered with the Sheriff's department-and it's still legal for me to do it the way you have suggested-how do I know how much they are worth?

The best way that I know of to figure out current market pricing (I'm sad to say it's down from years past now days), and also a great way to sell your guns, is to look at www.Gunbroker.com and www.gunsamerica.com for the same model guns in the same type condition as the ones your thinking of selling.  I have told my wife to list any of mine (that my kids don't want) starting at 75% of what I think they "should" bring and let the auction do it's thing (bidding wars we hope!) to bring what their worth at that time.

I'm sure that if you list here what you have we can give you some ballpark prices that could get you started.

Tips listing your guns:
-include good pictures
-point out any imperfections in the add
-don't include why your selling them (brokers will swamp you)
-include any shipping cost in your asking price (people like to think there getting FREE shipping
-if its a specialty gun there are LOTS of specialty gun forums on the net, find a forum for that gun and list it there

I'm sure others will think of more.

Sorry to hear about Greyfeathers.  If you send me a list and approx. condtion % wise I can go through my info here and get you in the Ballpark.  My email is:

Jaxtek001@yahoo.com

There are also several Publibations out there that list approximate values such as "Blue Book of Gun Values"

Very sorry about your loss.  Thanks for letting us know.

Depending on how important it is to you to maximize the value for each piece, an easy way would be to find a dealer in your area who buys from estates.  There are several in my area.  Obviously you need to know about what the guns are worth to make sure you are getting an appropriate value.

Like anything -- its a compromise.  You don't get top dollar for each piece, but you can probably sell the whole collection at one time and with a lot less personal effort.

Also, if maximizing the return isn't your main goal, consider giving a few of the pieces to people who were special to greyfeathers -- it will mean a lot to them.

Good luck to you, and my condolences.

Good advice DD.

I would also advise to enlist the help of a trusted friend who understands guns and  the gun market to help keep the Dealers 'honest'.

I sincerely hope that she can find someone Honest that she can trust.

On two separate occasions I have seen "good freinds" and "gun buddies" totally screw over the widow just to get a steal of a price on some guns.  They lied through their teeth about the condition and value of the guns.

Totally shameful and it boils my blood.

Yes, it is unreal that some would take advantage of someone like that, but it happens. Most of us have a "Protector" instinct when it comes to helping a woman that has had a trajedy such a losing a loved one, but some have a "Predator" instinct that they cannot control.
But then again alot depends on how you were raised, I was raised to be a Door opener, etc. . But then again I huess now that is concidered old fashioned.

Chief:

You and I were raised according to the same rules.  As I was opening the car door for my wife at the courthouse one day, I overheard a young woman standing nearby say to her male companion, "I'm glad I'm too young to need that done for me."

I turned to her, smiled, and said (as much for her companion's benefit as for hers), "Ma'am, I'd do the same for your daughter."

I drilled into my daughters as well that if a young man does not think she is worthy of him expending a little effort such as holding her door and coming to the door of the house when picking them up, then he is most definately NOT worthy of them.  They both married very polite men that worship the ground they walk on.
( of course I told them (The husbands) both on their wedding day, that if they ever hurt my daughter I am coming after them, then I told them I would never mention it again, and, Welcome to the family) Hmmmm

My wife and I often joke about how, even if we just go out to eat at a local seafood or BBQ place I will hold the car (Truck) door for her following a nice $15.00 meal, nothing but first class !  I know there are some men that get their ears chewed off when their wives see me doing that.   ;D
