Why is the barrel flared at the end?

I thought the way the design worked is that the slide catches on the barrel hood, pressure drops, the barrel tilts downward and the slide then moves rearward over the barrel.

Is the flare at the end of the barrel necessary for lockup?

I believe it allows a bigger hole in the front of the slide to give room for the barrel to tilt and allow the round to chamber at a better angle from the magazine...

Exactly Mich. . . . . also, it acts as a "bushing" between it and the hole in the front of the slide, holding the barrel "tight" for accuracy.
