Well count me in
« on: May 16, 2013, 10:40:55 PM »
I finally managed to acquire an R9.  I got this from another forum member (wahoowillie).  Can't say enough about how smooth the deal went with him.  As for the gun, it looks great, but won't get to shoot until this weekend.  Just to finish the day another gun ( a trade I did) arrived to day as well.  I also received a very nice STI Tactical 2011

Talked to Maria today, and got the low-down on my R9.  It was built in 2006.  The previous owner sent it in in March of this year for a malfunction.  Rohrbaugh cleaned up a burr on the barrel that was the cause.  They noticed a fair amount of wear so the replaced all of the worn parts, polished the feed ramp, put in all new pins and springs, and bead blasted the slide.  Per Maria it is just like a brand new gun.  I did order another mag and a second extra recoil spring.  Tomorrow it goes to the range.

I went to the range this morning with my son.  The STI performed flawlessly as expected.  What was unexpected was the light recoil.  Much less than my Baers with the same ammo.

The Rohrbaugh was a different story.  I looked for some 124 Gold Dot or Silver tip last night and couldn't find any.  So I just took some 115 range ammo.  It definitely didn't like that.  I jammed at least once every magazine.

I also need to find some mag extensions or I need to shoot it a lot more.

It is definitely a handful<G>

A friend did some reloads for us in 223.  My Savage didn't like them.  He didn't crimp them tight enough and the bolt would not fully close.  Luckily we had him just do a few so we could see how they shot.  We have enough to load 500 rounds so I am glad he didn't do them all at the same time.

I would try to find some Gold Dot's as this seems to be the best ammo for the pup.  You can buy it on Gunbroker.

Make sure the pistol is clean and well lubed...they don't like to be shot dry or right out of the box.  They also need several hundred rounds of break-in and are definitely ammo sensitive....funny thing is, some like one kind, others like other types.  Find what yours likes and pamper it with those (if you can get it).  Gold Dots are probably the best, but some like silvertips, mine shoots Lawman OK for range work, and some like Golden Sabres (others apparently don't!).  Like a trophy wife, this pistol doesn't like to be fed cheap stuff.  You definitely need the mag extension...any tendency to limp-wrist this pistol will result in a jam.

I agree on the ammo.  But unfortunately I have not been able to find any.  I went to Cabelas and they had ZERO 9mm on the shelf.  All I had was range ammo, so I tried it .  No joy.  As for breaking it in, it is a 2006 production so I think that has already been taken care of<G>.  I was looking at the grip extensions for other gun and wondering what would fit with a little tuning.  Thinking most 9 or 380 mags would be close in size, so will have to do a little experimenting.  No limp wristing here!!

On this subject, I'm in the minority around here, but my "Farmingdale" R9 eats this Remington GS 147-grain BJHP fodder like candy:

I've now dropped down to 124-grain rounds to achieve commonality with my H&K P7, but in today's market where quality ammunition is hard to find you might want to consider giving the  147-grain Golden Sabers a try. Also, these at Lucky Gunner won't last long.

This morning Lucky Gunner shows 115-grain Speer Gold Dots in stock at the above link. Get 'em while you can.

I think you already know I had a bad experience with Golden Sabres.

But the 124 & 147 Gold Dots feed great and IMO Gold Dots are good defense rounds in both these bullet weights  - IMO. I think the first 100 rounds I put through my R9 were 124gr Gold Dots and they worked great.

My R9 also really likes Lawman 124gr TMJs - I get the tightest groups with this ammo as compared to any other.

I have not have any problems with 147gr Winchester Ranger "T" - RA9T, but that ammo is a little expensive to run hundreds of rounds through it,

We're waiting on a carry law to be passed in Illinois and I plan to carry the RA9T in my R9 when I finally start taking it with me places...
