New Member! / YOUR Ammo Preference
« on: April 29, 2013, 12:58:10 AM »
Hi there,

I am new to the forum, and excited to be a proud owner of a new (to me) Rohrbaugh R9. I was in a local gun shop and they had just recently gotten the R9 in on trade and had little to say about it. I held it and was immediately impressed by the tolerances and overall build of the weapon. Very impressive to say the least. It was a bit more than I wanted to spend and I left the shop thinking about it .... I found this website and did some homework, and read many a thread where yall's enthusiasm about the weapon was evident, which led me to return today and make an offer on the weapon which the owner of the shop (thankfully) accepted. Its beautiful, I shot it today after the purchase and was again impressed ... and cannot wait to begin this weapons everyday carrying.

I did a quick search on ammo of choice and it was mainly range reports and other data that popped up, although good information, I would just like to get a feel for what brand / grain / etc. everyone is using in their daily carry and / or range time operations.

Thanks!

First off,,, welcome to the forum. I mostly lurk and, on occasion post a thing or two so not one of the "management". Have seen that many are using a quality(Gold Dot, Winchester, Remington, etc) 115gr or 124gr bullet with great function and accuracy at distances relative to this pistol design. Some even like a 147 grain bullet but IMO that heavy of a bullet out of such a short barrel will be very slow. Be safe, enjoy.........R

Welcome and congrats! There is a lot of information here and I for one am always learning new stuff. I am one of the 'newer' owners here (less than a year) and have found that my pup only likes gold dots or speer lawman. I carry mine every were but on Base with 147 grain got dots. Good luck with your purchase you made a great buy, and don't forget to post pictures.

Welcome to the Forum, and congratulations on your R9. You now own one of what I consider to be the finest pocket pistol yet designed.

As for ammunition preference, I now load 124-grain Remington Golden Sabers in my R9. However, I think it would be fair to say that, based on posts to the Forum, most members here seem to prefer 115/124-grain Speer Gold Dots or 115-grain Winchester Silvertips.  Just do a little experimentation to determine what fodder your R9 prefers -- provided you can find enough ammunition for the testing in this currently insane market.

Finding it does seem to be the issue these days!

Thanks for the replies, I am planning on having a range day and putting a few different rounds through and see what she likes.

I too am a new R9 owner and was wondering if anyone has tried the 124 gr. gold dot SOC (special operations cartridge)?  I found some on Ammunition Depot.com and based on the description, it's just a water-resistant version of the venerable 124gr gold dot that everyone seems to like.

Welcome to the forum fc2462.  And thank you for heads up for the new ammo.  Sounds like a good ammo to carry.  Considering we do get wet in the rain and sweat in the summer.

Thanks all for the comments!

fc2462: Funny you should mention that variety of ammo, as while I was looking last night after the gun purchase I ran across (and subsequently purchased) a box through a guy on gun broker. He relisted another box shortly after I purchased mine ... I guess he is not a fan of combining shipping as it was only mentioned that he had one box ... but anyway here is the link to the current auction if anyone is interested:

Again, thanks all!

Just thought I would throw this out there, the seller of the auction was actually quite helpful and did have a shipping bargin, so you will have to scratch my previous comments!

Once I put a few rounds of the SOC through the PUP I will post some words on here about how she liked it ...

The premium self-defense rounds that have cycled flawlessly in my R9 are 124gr & 147gr Gold Dots,  147gr Winchester RA9T and 147gr Winchester Bonded PDX1.

For practice ammo 124gr and 147gr Lawman have cycled flawlessly in my R9.

I did have trouble (failurte to ignite) -  with 147gr Bonded Golden Sabres.  I won't say light stikes because I don't think light firing pin strikes were the problem.

While I didn't have any trouble cycling 124gr Blazzer Brass, they were keyholing and pretty inaccurate out of the R9 so I stopped practicing with them:
