New R9 today, question for you please
« on: January 02, 2013, 03:36:04 PM »
I just picked up a new R9 stealth today. I bought it to carry and don't plan on shooting much through it. It happens to be the only 9mm I have and I want to buy some ammo.

Ammo is in short supply and I was able to find 2 types.

Critical duty and Remington HD Ultimate home defense

My question is, has anyone used the Remington HD in their R9 yet? If so did it feed and fire properly?

Howdy Snowy, welcome to the forum and congrats on buying the finest pocket rocket on the planet!

Regardless of which one you buy, you MUST test it in Your gun to be sure Your gun Likes it.  It seems some R9s prefer certain brands while other R9s do not.

Considering how inconsistant the Critical Duty has been performing in members R9s; if it were me, I would even blindly pick the Remington over the Hornady.  But again do not carry it until you test it.

Also, be sure and lube your gun before you first firing and be sure your grip screws are snug.  Don't over tighten, you can strip the screws easily.

Don't forget you need a firmer grip than you would with a full size pistol.

Good Luck and please give us a range report.

Enjoy!

Thanks Reinz, I also ordered some Silvertips today after reading some replies on this forum. I will try the Hornady, Remington, and the silvertips and report what worked best for my R9.

Federal and Gold Dot are available from some online distributors.

I should have done  a range report on my new R9, I'll do one before I go to bed tonight, but basically I got the pistol last Saturday.  I field stripped it, cleaned it although it wasn't dirty, lubed it and took it to the range, and fired 50 rounds of 124 gr Gold Dots.  I choose 124gr Gold Dots because so many people here reported having good results with them and I really get freaked out if my carry gun has a malfunction - I mean I obsess about it, and I can't have peace of mind with it, there will be this nagging doubt in the back of my mind about it and it drives me nuts.  I have even had nightmares where I am being attacked and when I pull  the tigger I have a failure to fire.

So anyway, I want to have confidence in this pistol and so far it's been great.  And Speer Gold Dots are a pretty good SD round IMO.

I was fortunate in that in September when ammo prices were creeping up because of Obama re-election fear, I bought about $700 worth of ammo, so I am set for both practice and premium SD ammo.

I'd hate to be scrambling around now trying to get 9mm ammo, I wish you luck.

Snowy, Silvertips are good.  I was answering your question on an"either/or" basis.  As mentioned by others, Gold Dots have the best track record if they are available to you.

100 rounds of 124gr Gold Dots through my new R9 with no problems.

I've also been using 124gr Lawman TMJs for practice ammo and haven't has problems with those so far either.

Yes,a welcome from me also!

As far as the ammo goes,I have not had great luck with Remington pistol ammo.I have no experience with the Critical Duty but as others have said may be hit or miss..

Personally the Silvertips should do ya good.

I have used them, and the WWB for practice has been good for me..

My R9 likes the 124 gr. Gold Dots as well; this is my "go-to" round for my R9.
