Dynamic Pocket Duo

Lately in this unseasonably warm weather we've been having in East Tennessee, when wearing BDUs without a jacket or vest, I've found myself carrying this "dynamic pocket duo" encased in Hedley holsters and loaded with Remington Golden Sabers (124-grain in R9 and 102-grain in G380) -- R9 in right front pocket and G380 in right rear.  The G380 was delivered in 2001 (No. 64) and the R9 was delivered in 2004 (No. 132). Both have stood the test of time and use.

Recognizing that felt recoil is highly subjective, it has been interesting to note that when firing the two pistols at the same range session the recoil of the straight-blowback G380 appears to be essentially equal to that of the locked-breech R9. The G380 was my EDC before I took delivery of the R9, and it seems quite suitable for its occasional backup role to what I call "The Masterpiece." Neither one of these "pocket rockets" has displayed any vices in the years I have owned them.

The custom silversmith in Gatlinburg who cast the grips for the G380, Malcolm "Mac" McDonell, passed away two years ago on February 28, 2010. He was one of a kind and is sorely missed.

The late Mac McDonell, who cast those grips, was a veteran of World War II. In December 1945, following the end of the War, President Truman sent General of the Army George C. Marshall to China in an unsuccessful effort to broker a coalition government between the Nationalist allies under Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek and Communists under Mao Zedong. In 1946, Mac served as General Marshall's radio operator in Nanking (Nanjing), China, during which time the Nanking War Crimes Tribunal was being held.

Mac tried eight (repeat, eight) times to cast sterling silver grips for my R9, but the unavoidably minimal bit of shrinkage involved in the lost-wax process of molten-metal casting (even with the newest "no-shrink" mold materials) prevented him from being able to produce a pair of grips with the two screw holes in each panel precisely matching those in the frame. For grips having only one screw, such as those of the G380, the process was easy for Mac -- requiring only a small amount of grinding and polishing of the backsides to achieve perfect fit.
