R9 in checked baggage?
« on: September 13, 2008, 02:27:05 AM »
Heading out of town for a week and am contemplating taking my R9. I normally pack my Glock 19 in a Pelican case. One of those guns that if it's stolen it's a big deal but not that big a deal. It's easily and inexpensively replaced.

The R9 would be a better carry for me on this trip. While I'll bring the G19 anyway, the R9 could be carried all week.

Should I risk checking it?

Jack, If you do, insure it for the full amount at the airport counter.  Tom

I would check in the G19 and be done with it.  As you said, from an emotional standpoint you would simply take the money from the loss of a Glock and walk into your local gun shop and pick up a new G19.  I would bet you are a bit more attached to the pup and though it could be replaced it would not be the same one.  Don't get me wrong - I like my Glocks but consider them a functional tool.  My R9 is a fine piece of shooting art thats very special.

My only experience with packing into a Pelican case wasn't good.  Coming out of Dallas and going back to Tampa, TSA FORGOT to fasten my "TSA approved" locks.  No locks on a gun that went connection through Detroit!!!!!!!!!!!!    Gun was there, but I was holding my breath.

So, Tom, how do you add extra insurance at the ticket counter?  Never heard of this, but it makes sense.

Thanks.

Hush-Hush,
/sarcasm/ If Senator Biden hears you talking affectionately about your pistol, he'll say you are mentally challenged and probably should not be allowed to poses a hand gun /end scarcasm/.....

ask the ticket counter agent for "more insurance" forms, fill them out for the amount you want and charge it. One can really raise the amount to whatever they want. Then the package or bag is cared for even more. I've never had a problem with a bag with extra coverage over and above the airline limit.  Tom
