Follow- up - 6+1 Mag release
« on: February 18, 2006, 01:19:42 AM »
Back in October, I wrote regarding a problem I was having with the Magazine popping out on the first round when loaded 6+1.  Erich suggested a change in grip, and Calvin suggested it was thinning lube. Well, I just got around to shooting it for the first time since October, sad to say (I have too many hobbies), and thought I would provide some feedback.

I do not think it is a lube problem, as the first three magazines popped even though I had lubed exaclty according to directions, with Super Lube.

Next, I started playing with my grip.  When any portion of my hand, whether it is my small finger, or the meaty portion of my left hand using erich's "thumb" grip technique, it did not pop.  However, that seemed like chearing, having some portion of my hand hlolding it in, so I went back to my regular grip, and low and ebhold, I shot two mahgs without it popping.  Unfortunately, I could not either make it pop, or not pop, consistently.  After about 100 rounds, which is all my hand could take, (it was cold), the only thing I think I was doing different when there was no popping was to use a very firm grip with my hand rotated forward slightly more than usual, so  that it is really crammed into the web of my hand, more like a grip on a S&W stubby revolver than say a .45 auto.  Maybe it is the slight additional rotation (and I am not talking about limp wristing, which I proved caused other problems, i.e., FTF), that makes a difference.  I will have to experiment some more, but I did conclude that on my gun at least, it is not the thinning lube.

Again, it never happened on 5+1.

I would be interested to know whether the replacement of the magazine catch solves the problem.  Hope to hear from some of you.

Thanks,

Brian

Hi Brian,

Well - I am again thinking how that catch is tensioned by the mainspring and so should be well strong enough.  All that still comes to mind is whether the profile of the catch is ''sharp'' enough or angled suitably.

I have never (so far!) had this occur to me with full mags and so do wonder about the catch.  The normal catch has an under cut angle and also engages in a small groove on mag floor plate - which should be A1 reliable.

What I'll try and do soon is take a close-up pic of mine to show what it should look like - that at least will give a comparitive reference.

Brian - here are two pics which I hope might do for reference.  I have wondered since taking these, whether by any chance you do not quite get full engagement of the heel catch with full mags - in other words - do you not quite get that final fwd movement into the notch on mag heel plate.  Just a thought.

I have to be pretty firm with insertion of full mag's and ensure that catch has gone into the notch .  See what you think anyways.

Thanks R9S. I agree that the magazine catch should not cause it unless it is out of spec.  Looking at the old post from last year, "Ed" said that they replaced the mag. catch at the factory, which is why I mentioned it. It does seem that a sharper undercut would make for  a firmer engagement.  Appreciate the pictures.  I think I will call Rohrbaugh and ask Karl about this. Perhaps they changed the mag  catch (release) design.  In the mean time, 5+1 is not so bad, but always frustrating when it does not work as it should.
