Are all Rohrbaugs finiky?
« on: September 07, 2005, 10:45:32 AM »
I will be getting my new Rohrbaugh any week now, Just hoping I will be happy with it. Seems a few are having problems. Can anyone make me feel better about my purchase, getting cold feet. I dont have time to do extensive testing, just want to shoot a few mags thru it, clean, and then carry with confidence for at least 6-8 mos, as I did with my Seecamp.

Yes I have previously read those comments. Just curious why a weapon is test fired at the factory, obviously operates properly, but gives some members problems when they shoot it for the first time? Does anybody know how many rounds the weapon is shot before it is shipped? Thanks

Good question.  Maybe someone knows how much testing goes on at the factory.  I don't, but I did do some calculations...

Suppose the gun in question has a failure rate of 5% (five failures in 100 rounds fired).  Then if the factory were to test it by firing six rounds (i.e. one magazine full), the chance of having NO failures would be 0.95 to the sixth power, or about .73  -- almost a 3 in 4 chance that no problem would be noticed.  Even though IMHO a failure rate of 5% is pretty high for a carry gun.

If the failure rate were only 1% (still higher than I'd like), there would be a 95% chance of passing a six-shot inspection test with no failures.

So maybe the reason the end user experiences a problem is because he or she fires it a great deal more.

Your idea parallels my feeling towards an auto gun,  "I know it just fired 600 rounds, but will it fire the next round ??" ;)

RJ nails that one - re semi's - 10 rounds, 100, or 1,000 - no real way to guarantee the next round will fire!  That said - enough crud getting into a revo just could make it difficult to operate and all but fail.

So many variables but for each R9 owner, he/she must just break in their gun - find the ammo that suits them and the gun best - and then maintain the pup lovingly.  In the actually unlikely event of any problems - and remember we do not hear back about the majority of cases where all is just fine - then if really necessary the gun would have to go back for a check.

IIRC, statistically - Eric told me that returns were very small in number indeed.  I had some early hiccups as I broke in and tried different ammo - but am now well happy and confident in the gun's ability.

A final point - irregardless of our carry platform - and never knowing when Murphy might strike - it is essential to practice the basics of failure drills.  No gun is or should ever be regarded as 100% certain in function - 99.99% maybe - but nothing in this life is 100% certain, other than that we don't live forever! :o ;D

R9SCarry , very true, just curious what ammo you found works best? Do the Rohrbaugh Bros. reccommend a specific ammo??  thanks

Well - I found Gold Dots in 115 and 124 weights were best - for me.  Also the Blazer JHP's were good even in the aluminum cases - same Speer bullets.

I think Karl has recently mentioned another round, I forget which.  I do tho feel that full AOL is imortant - GD's go to 1.124" whereas many other offerings seem shorter by enough to matter.  Just my observation.

Do browse to my FAQ site victor (did I ever say welcome BTW?  Welcome anyways :) ).  Some buttons on the site will take you to some test data I carried out on different ammo - not mega scientific but maybe of interest.  Link is in my sig line.

Just to follow up on R9SCarry's post, Karl mentioned Silvertips, and specifically recommended them to me last month.

I've put about 100 rounds through my R9s since I received it a few weeks ago, and all types of ammo (I tried 5 brands) fed flawlessly except for Horniday TAP, which seemed to allow two rounds out of the magazine sometimes. This problem happened over and over, at least twice with each magazine. The TAP bullet is quite conical rather than round-nosed, so I'm blaming the problem on that.
