It's obvious you appreciate fine, mechanical things...!
I think my amusing appreciation had turned into a helpless obsession a long time ago! I collect German issued military chronos that specifically use the Swiss Lemania 5100 calibre, a very collectable military automatic chronograph that is no longer in the making.
Regarding your CCW class... Are you qualifying with your R9...? Other folks in your class showing interest in this fine mechanical gem...? Out of curiosity as to what different CCW schools teach/emphasize... Tell us what goes when finished - yes...?
My 2-hour basic class was taught by a deputy sheriff in Orange County, FL. It’s a required course in FL for a CCW permit.
• We covered 4 basic safety rules
o Treat all firearms as they are loaded
o Don’t point it at anyone you are not willing to shoot,
o Keep that finger off the trigger until your site is on target
o Know your target (don’t shoot at a dark figure in your house, it could be your daughter coming back from College – a true story)
• We also covered FL state statues regarding guns.
• We walked through several real-life situations and make believe scenarios.
• We talked about liabilities for our actions in both federal and civil courts (ala Bernard Shaw incident in NY subway in 1989.)
• We shot our guns and demonstrate to him that we can load and unload the gun safely and correctly.
• We got our passport-type pictures taken.
• We got our finger printed.
• Then we got a certificate of completion.
• All I have to do now is send in the application with a fee and wait 90 days!
I think it was cool that my instructor is a deputy for he has daily real world experience. He shared many incidents of his local experienced sheriffs forgot the basic safety rules and shot themselves in the foot in front of school children during demonstrations. The point is: GO BACK TO THE BASIC. He is also a firm believer in your right to defend yourself and others. I learned a lot.
In FL, it is very easy to get a CCW permit. Go to class, get fingers printed, take a picture, and sent in the application with a fee. You can NOT be turned down unless, of course, you have a “history” of things. No need for gun registration in FL.
Cheers!
