>>Sooooo...  What's the deal with all the fancy watches...?  Do you collect them, or sell them or what...?  Interesting.  It's obvious you appreciate fine, mechanical things...!

Regarding your CCW class...  Are you qualifying with your R9...?  Other folks in your class showing interest in this fine mechanical gem...?  Out of curiosity as to what different CCW schools teach/emphasize...  Tell us what goes when finished - yes...?

Take care & enjoy...!...TW<<

I think my amusing appreciation had turned into a helpless obsession a long time ago! I collect German issued military chronos that specifically use the Swiss Lemania 5100 calibre, a very collectable military automatic chronograph that is no longer in the making.

My 2-hour basic class was taught by a deputy sheriff in Orange County, FL. It’s a required course in FL for a CCW permit.
•      We covered 4 basic safety rules
o      Treat all firearms as they are loaded
o      Don’t point it at anyone you are not willing to shoot,
o      Keep that finger off the trigger until your site is on target
o      Know your target (don’t shoot at a dark figure in your house, it could be your daughter coming back from College – a true story)
•      We also covered FL state statues regarding guns.
•      We walked through several real-life situations and make believe scenarios.
•      We talked about liabilities for our actions in both federal and civil courts (ala Bernard Shaw incident in NY subway in 1989.)
•      We shot our guns and demonstrate to him that we can load and unload the gun safely and correctly.
•      We got our passport-type pictures taken.
•      We got our finger printed.
•      Then we got a certificate of completion.
•      All I have to do now is send in the application with a fee and wait 90 days!

I think it was cool that my instructor is a deputy for he has daily real world experience. He shared many incidents of his local experienced sheriffs forgot the basic safety rules and shot themselves in the foot in front of school children during demonstrations. The point is: GO BACK TO THE BASIC. He is also a firm believer in your right to defend yourself and others. I learned a lot.

In FL, it is very easy to get a CCW permit. Go to class, get fingers printed, take a picture, and sent in the application with a fee. You can NOT be turned down unless, of course, you have a “history” of things. No need for gun registration in FL.

Cheers!

>>Thanks for the great response, Cuteo...

Although I am a Virginia resident, I too applied for and received a Florida CCW permit - just had to give good reason for it (I do trade shows there often resulting in me carrying large sums of cash), and a copy of my Virginia permit, with a picture for the Florida permit (No pic needed for Virginia CCW).

Sounds like you had a good CCW teacher.  Like your instructor, mine was also a cop (chief of police).  We also spent a lot of time going over the personal/emotional/spiritual ramifications of shooting/killing another human being - having us ask ourselves the question...

1) Could I actually kill someone if the time and need arise?  Not as simple a question as it sounds...and for me - I believe I could if having to defend my life or that of someone else (in VA the only acceptable circumstances are in defence of self or FAMILY...even neighbor or best friend does not count and then you are talking murder one!).  But reality is for me - I probably wouldn't really know if I could shoot someone else unless the situation came up...just being honest.  I have made a conscious decision that I could...I believe in the reason for it...but I believe only the test of reality will tell results.

Something else about the Florida CCW permit...  Having one - even out of state...it is my understanding reciprocity is shared with something like 39 other states - which is very handy...TW<<

You're right. We did the same thing in class today.

Another note, we also went over how a person's mind will immediately react natually to sudden stressful situation such as a robbery. His body will shutdown everything unrelated and his peripheral focus will narrow down to the opponent's weapon. (Sometimes people inadvertingly pee in their pants because their body shutdown the muscle that keep 'em in and only focus on the situation at hand!) So the point was that preparation for the event is very important, mentally and physically. Go to the range twice a week to practice and constantly go over the what-if scenerios in your mind.

I'm a newbee and have a lot to learn, still. Been reading a lot here. Great forum!

Cheers!

Cuteo - glad you have gotten this far - just a long wait now.

Like TW - I got my FL non-res permit - not all that long ago - despite one request for further info - it still reached me in approx 60 days - I was impressed.  My NRA certification satisfied the training aspect, tho I don't remember adding anything for ''good reason'' per se.

IIRC there are 26 states of reciprocity - tho in NH I think it is - only valid if you actually reside in FL.  Have the sheet of info somewhere (yeah right - ''somewhere''!). :D

Anytime any of us travels on the FL permit - almost everyone recommends having with you info in print - re the laws of the states you are in - and so if a cop stops you - and does not know - it can help resolve things quick.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
BTW - I am on fast connection but - a suggestion - downsize pics to maybe 600 or 700 pixels wide - that helps avoid folks scrolling across - I run 1600 x 1200 but the pics are still real big in my cascaded browser window!  Great pics BTW.  Also they can then if downsized way smaller and so more ''friendly'' to poor folks on dial up!!
I have a FL permit too.  I was in Tampa last Dec and I stopped in at the Tampa PD and had my prints scanned in.  When I got home I sent my app and had the permit less than 2 weeks later.
No reason need be given, and my NRA instructor certification was all I needed for the training requirement.
If you want to know exactly whos permit works where, check out:
