Let's Share Some Cleaning Tips

Ok, we've all hit on favorite lubes and cleaners, how about some clean up tips we may pick up from each other?

I'll start-

For any gun, that I just do a test shoot on or just shoot a few mags or cyls full, I will do just a "ghetto clean".  I used to put the gun in safe and say to myself, I'll clean it mananna.  Well tomorrow never came, and then when I neeeded the gun and I did not feel totally confident, and of course did not have the time to "clean" it.  
I'm one of those anal guys who spend A LOT of time cleaning.

Anyway, the Ghetto Clean - just be sure to have a bottle of solvent and at least 1000 cotton swabs on hand, 2000 is better   and a box of kleenex.
I just dip the swab in the solvent and hit the bolt face, breech area, whole back portion of the inside of the slide area, including the ejection port.
Then hit the feed ramp, the top of chamber and even the chamber.
Then wipe and dry those areas with kleenex, using pinky finger.
Double up one kleenex put on bolt face, close slide, pull trigger.  This way you make sure, solvent and guk did not get down firing pin hole.
Use dry swab to clean chamber.

Even use a swab in the barrel if you like. We're talking ghetto here.
Last, press mag spring down and use swab to clean UNDER mag lips.  You will be surprised here.

Believe it or not, This just takes 5 minutes.  A lot quicker than it took to write this.

I use Micro-X aerosol contact cleaner made by LPS Labs. It is an excellent cleaner and safe for all surface materials. For some reason I couldn't paste the link to the web site.

I have been using Aerokroil (made by Kano Labs) works very well. It isn't stated in the link but is listed in the can as a gun cleaner.

I leave my empty, dirty, gun on the counter top, the wife gets a clue and cleans it.    Well, not quite…  What about the cleaner in a can stuff, Gun Blast or something similar.  Seems to do a good quick clean on my difficult to disassemble Ruger MK pistols.  Keep it away from synthetics though, discolored the plastic stock on a 10-22 rifle.

The mention of "ghetto cleaning" reminds me of a grizzled old company armorer I knew back in the day. He had buddy in the motor pool who, I am reasonably certain, had set aside a barrel of gasoline for his exclusive use.

"Cosmoline sucks," he used to say.

He never actually got caught during the time I knew him, but some of the weapons in his care smelled suspiciously of what the Brits would call "petrol."

I hate to think how many Army regs he violated.

I'd be really worried about Kleenex ... it can be very gritty and leave behind some souvenirs that could turn into tar balls!

Here is another tip -

Tired of your bronze brushes turning gang-green ?

After you are finished, spray them off with "gun blast" or similar.  
Next time you go for your brushes, no green stuff on your stuff.

I use spray brake cleaner from Wal-Mart, it's less than half the price of the "gun blast" stuff.  
Great for using when doing a thorough complete tear down gun cleaning, or a quickie.  
But keep it off of wood stocks, and synthetics- use on metal only.

That's a good idea.  I've gone to the Hoppe's Bore Snake and have one to fit all calibers I shoot; seems to work just fine.  Bore looks clean afterwards so I'm happy with it.

I like Singer Sewing Machine Oil.  You can get it at any Singer Sewing Center and at a lot of fabric stores.    Instead of  a 1 oz bottle for $3.99 at the gun shop, it's a 4 oz bottle for $1.25.   If you stop to think how fast sewing machines run and about the gears and shafts etc that need lube.  If it works for them it's great for firearms.   A parachute rigger who owned his own sewing machines turned me on to it years ago.  

I end all my cleaning sessions with an air compressor.  I have one and lots of other people do to.  It doesn't need to be a commercial grade, just a small one like runs a nail gun will do.  Blew the whole thing dry, prior to final lube for assembly.
