Stupid Question on Mag Springs
« on: November 09, 2008, 07:13:29 PM »
Ok, I realize this is stupid; but I want to be sure that there is no way to put the mag spring in backwards.  It looked like it could be done, so I just wanted to verify that I did it properly before I have another spring take off into the upper atmosphere :).

That is definitely not a stupid question and from my experience one
can install it backwards. I always lay out the old spring next to the
mag in the proper position prior to installing the new one.

Easier said than done since it about took my head off on the way out :).  I have no reference point.

I had the same problem so I got a reference point by the disassembly
of another magazine. Reassembly issues can be disconcerting also
but skill improves with practice just like the frame and slide. Eye
protection is a good idea when dealing with any spring under pressure.

There must be a more objective way of describing the proper spring
alignment but I don't know it.

BytorJr:

With apologies for my having overlooked this thread until now, here is a link to Chris's photograph and comments on R9 magazine parts and assembly in the FAQ Sheet:

And, as Tracker notes, your question is not "stupid." Far from it. As a matter of fact, in my opinion, the only "stupid" questions are those not asked when answers are not known.

Thanks!!!  I've been there before, but totally forgot about his maintenance section.  Time to put my safety glasses on :).
