Just got my Hawk back from Surgery
« on: January 19, 2011, 08:27:51 AM »
I just got my Talon II Lightweight Bobtail back from Surgery at NHC after an unfortunate meeting of my Brother, The Talon II, and Bad Ammo. I have not had a chance to fire it yet but from all appearances it looks good.

This gun is a little unusual in that we had some upgrades done that NHC just started doing. One thing we did was replace the ramped Stainless Steel barrel with a Carbon Steel rampless Barrel. They were able to do this by installing a Steel Ramp in the Alloy frame of the Talon. This will give me a few benefits such as:
1. Increased accuracy due to the Harder and smoother steel
2. Increased Barrel Life
3. The ability to more reliably feed differant types and manufacturers Ammo

Plus I got the reliability package done and a refinishing job as well
The gun feels really good, can't wait until I get back out on the Range in a few days.

Also in case you are wondering what is next to it, that is one of my
William-Henry knives. I Like to think quality shows and these two really go together well. Both are extremely Sharp, Deadly, and the top of their field.

Beautiful pair of weapons. NHC builds a great gun and William Henry make good knives (as a hobbiest knifemaker I really can appreciate their work).

Hope the Hawk runs as good as it looks when you get it to the range!

Thanks, yes they a both great. The William-Henry is a GenTac (Gentleman's Tactical) w/ Wave Damascus Blade, Mammoth Tooth Fossil Insert, Diamonds in Controls, and Titanium Clip.  1 of 250 Made. Beautiful knife, the people at my office worry about me sometimes because when I am concenttrating on something I tend to take it out and work the action while thinking. It is like melted butter, so smooth.

Quite a duo, there, Chief.  I know you're glad to have the Hawk home and anxious to get to the range.  Do enjoy!

One thing that makes it hard with them is that both companies (Nighthawk Customs and William-Henry) tend to release new products on a regular basis. They of course also send me notices of such products.  I would rather they not let me know ! In the case of William-Henry they will give existing customers first shot at their releases which are never more than 500 pieces and may very well be 1 offs.  Nighthawk seems just as bad though as the factory rep calls me and says things like
"We are coming out with an 100 Anniversary model, interested?"
That is one thing we do not have to worry about Rohrbaugh doing often  ;D

Couple notes on the Talon II

The Specs on it are as follows:

Commander Sized
4.25" Carbon Steel Match Grade Barrel
Bushinged Barrel
Ed Brown Bobtail
Anodized Aluminum Alloy Frame
26 Oz. Total Weight as opposed to 34 Oz. if steel

When the gun is empty it feels a little top heavy, but when loaded the balance is perfect

Cheif - Awesome duo!

I have a small William Henry folder myself.  Amazing knife, only weighs a few ounces!.

Nothing like a Henry.

Can you clear up some confusion for me?

You mentioned in your OP that you had the Reliabilty Package done when you sent your Hawk back.
I am at a total loss, I thought all NightHawks came with reliabilty packages - afterall that's kinkd of what gives it it's reputation.
Or- is this some kind of extra super duper techno wizard stuff that goes above and beyond what our mere mortal minds can handle?   :D    i.e., maybe some stuff the competition doesn't offer yet.

Thanks

You must have one of the Carbon-Fiber models. Very nice !
Here is a nice video on William-Henry Knives

http://www.williamhenrystudio.com/art-knifemaking-lg.cfm

Back to the Talon II Reliability Package.
Many Custom/semi custom shop's versions of a reliability package is to use the better parts in them ie: slide stops, springs, etc. Nighthawk's Package differs in that they can do it to any gun. Their own guns have this package when they leave the factory.  What they did for me was needed due to the various changes I was making. Night hawk always uses the best parts. They do not have differant levels of parts. The reliabilty package can be done on any 1911 based gun.

What they do is

Throat the barrel
Polish the Ramps
Check chamber Clearances
Set the tension on extractor
Replace all springs
And generaly have the smith look the gun over for anything out of whack

I ran 100 rounds through the Talon II yesterday and it had no hickups at all.

Wow, great video.   After watching that, I feel I got a bargin on my knife.    What a lot of time and effort - more than what goes into some guns.

Mine is a carbon fiber scales with titanium liner.

Thanks for clearing up the confusion on the Nighthawk.

I am in the market for one of the Carbon Fiber models now for General use. The knife in the Pic w/ the Talon is 1 of 35 made .  So I tend to be careful with how it is used.
