Glock 17 or Glock 19
« on: January 19, 2007, 02:39:44 PM »
Hi all, I am presently looking to purchase one or the other. I have not fired either one.  I figured I could tap into the vast knowledge on this forum. Any guidance or opinions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance Dan
PS will be away for the weekend so probably will not respond till Monday

Dan - I still have no Glocks but have shot a good few.

IMO either is good and only really a matter of size.  If the 17 is manageable for carry then it'd be my choice as I like larger.  That said the 19 performs so close to the same - just a tad smaller.

If you want a 9mm Glock - either will serve well.

I agree with Chris; there is a contingent who lean toward the
17 because it was the first--kind of like the 5 inch 1911, etc.
I have the 19, love it and am looking to add the 17 to it.
One member here is in law enforcement and carries the 17L--
longer barrel used primarily for competition.

I have the G17,19,& 26. The 26 is my favorite. But if given a choice between 17 or 19 I would go with the 19. :P ;)

Get the 19.

The difference in size is small enough so that you'll never notice it while shooting.  You will, however, notice it if you need to carry the gun concealed.

I have both the 19 and 26.  The 26 is 10 years old, and the 19 is 6 months old.  Now that I have the 19, the 26 spends a lot more time in the safe.  However, if legal or economic circumstances ever limited me to one gun, the 26 is it.

I love my Glock model 30 (compact .45).  I would go for the 19.  Basically the same pistol as the 17, but easier to carry.

Howdy -  First off -  what is your main objective?  Range gun or Carry gun, or both?     IMHO  if "carry" fits into the picture, then I think most folks are usually happier with the 19.  I know I am.

If it is mainly going to be a range gun, and maybe some competition in the picture - then definitely go the 17, no doubt.  Especially if you are going to spend a lot of time and ammo with it(250+ range sessions).  It will just be easier on you in that scenario.

>>I too have the G-17, 19, and 26.  The 17 is great for what it is - especially if you want lots of ammo in one clip...normal round count for a G-17 mag is 17, can be boosted to 20 with different mag base.  This might be a great asset in a fire fight or some competitions, but it's a lot of weight to carry around, and if you have small hands it's a lot to wrap around.

Of the three it's a toss up for me between the 19 and 26 as favorite...varies from day to day and purpose.  For concealed carry either will work.  An advantage of the 19 (and 17) is that they now have utility rails.  Don't think the 26 does.  This will allow you to attach a light or laser to your gun easily.  I keep my G-19 with M6 light/laser at hands reach bedside.  The factory mags for the G-19 is a count of 15, and the G-26 is ten.

Funny thing is I shoot my G-26 the best of the three guns (still shoot good with the others though).  And...you can use a G-19 mag with modified base in the 26 which basically gives you a G-19 with a shorter barrel.  Can do the same thing using a G-17 mag in a G-19.  And of course all three guns will take the G-18 30 round mag for when push comes to shove.

So my advice - buy all three.  But if the choice is between the 17 and 19 I would go with the G-19 every day...TW<<

Thank You All,  This was exactly what I needed. Hopefully I will soon be a Bay Constable here on Long Island. I was told to get a Glock 17 or 19.  After a review of these posts it looks to me like the general consensus is the 19 might be better suited for what I need.  I spoke to Karl R. he also leaned towards the 19.  Thanks again for all replies a Glock 19 it is!  Dan

Sounds like a solid choice Dan.Good luck with your career in LE.It was the best thing I did in my life career wise.\

I used the 26 as a back up on duty and had a 30 as an off duty gun for a time.Don``t think you can go wrong with any Glock you choose although a 19 can serve both as a duty gun as well as off duty.
