Long guns
« on: November 21, 2005, 08:47:41 AM »
Well, I finally picked up my new favorite go to the range and kill paper guns.

The one on top is the standard 7.62x39 AK-47.  The bottom one is the new (at least to me) AK-74 chambered in 5.45x39.5.  Both are from Arsenal of Bulgaria.  The top one is milled and the bottom one is stamped.  I am waiting on ammo for the AK-74 but got to take out the 7.62 yesterday.  Fun to shoot!

AK-74 (5.45x39.5)

AK-47

And just for kicks I took some quick photos of the rest of the long gun family.

Marlin 336 (.30-30)

Beretta 391 (12 Ga)

Savage (.17HMR)

Marlin model 60

The group photo.

A beautiful collection!  (Just looking at that Marlin 336 makes me want to go chase some venison.)

Rocnerd,

They are beautiful.  I sure would like an AK-47.

Yeah, the Marlin hasn't taken any Venison, but it has taken a hog.  I was hoping to go deer hunting this year, but the season is wearing on and the outlook isn't good.  Next year for sure though.  I will go hog hunting before spring, I need to make some more pulled pork.  This year isn't done yet though, I may get out there for my deer, you never know what is on the horizon.

I heard a rumor about a ban on imported barrels for Ak's and figured even if it wasn't true it was a good excuse to get one.  Then I got there and figured, . . . got talked into easily I should say, I'd get the Ak-74 also.  I have 2000 rounds of 5.45 (splitting it with a friend) on the way and four more 30 round mags for each.  7.62 is hard to get in bulk right now.  I hear all sorts of rumours concerning why, but Iraq is always at the top of the list.
So, after the turkey is all gone I should be sitting pretty concerning the AKs, except for the 7.62.  So, I have tasked my friend of hitting the gun show the weekend after Thanksgiving, since I'll be visiting my family up in CT, to try and hunt down some fairly cheap 7.62.  I hope he strikes it big.
Anyway, thanks for the nice comments.  I think my next gun on the list is one of those P7M8s that FlyandScuba keep tempting me with. :) ;D :D

Looks very promising indeed.

Good set of pics:)

Hey, don't get me started on long guns - sheesh - I'll be filling these pages till they scroll into oblivion LOL!  I will tho for the hell of it - indulge in a few pics - of course my AK will have to feature - it's an SAR1 - bit ''trigger-slappy'' which is why it has some silicon tube on trigger.

Others are pretty self explanatory ........ plenty more where they came from ;).  One or two bit grainy I'm afraid because so reduced.

I am loving that Savage lever gun and the Ruger No. 1.  They are on the list.  Damn, that list is ever growing.

Sadly - as far as I remember, the Savage 99 series ceased production a while back - and also it would seem it is good to find one of the early ones, which appear to be quite collectible, as well as nice to shoot!  I was lucky with this one - won it in a gun draw at a semi local firehall.!

The Ruger #1 was a serious indulgence - brought on my enjoyment of the 45-70 thru the BFR revo.  I knew the #1 was about the toughest dude out there and so felt the need to ''widen the envelope'' with that round. ::) ;)

I push a 405 thru that atop a near compressed charge of 3031 - not in fact a top load quite but hey - ''Buffalo Gun'' does come to mind when you touch it off! ;D

The only .45-70 I ever shot was a single shot contender pistol.  DAMN!  But I loved it.  Yeah, the Savage is no longer in production, but I still would like one.

I like that wood on your AK.  I am going to swap out the black plastic on the AK for some nice wood.

Hi Everybody,

In the spirit of small but powerful pocket pistols, I have always been fascinated by the idea of a light take-down carbine (long gun) that will fit in a day pack.  Several days ago, I traded some guns I no longer shoot for the Kel-Tec Sub 2000 in 9 mm.  It folds up into a 16 inch long package, slips into a pack neatly, and shoots the same ammo as the R9.  The link to it is:
http://www.kel-tec.com/prod03.htm

I haven't shot it yet, but plan to give it a workout next weekend if the weather warms up here on the mountain top in Wyoming.

It is in the same spirit as the R9, in that you can conceal it easily in an RV drawer or a day pack, and no one knows that you have it until you need it.

Best Wishes,
LeonB

>>For a .9mm Carbine I picked up a Beretta Storm a while back and absolutely LOVE it...!  It is very accurate and a lot of fun to shoot...and I can use my Beretta 92 mags in it.

For a while now I have been thinking of picking up an underlevel - probably a Marlin...although I can't decide on a caliber.  I'm leaning towards either .357 or 30-30.  Any and all advice on this will be sincerely appreciated...!

And, BTW...nice guns there, guys...!!...TW<<

TW - yep - the CX-4 Storm is a great carbine - rather overpriced IMO but - very good shooter.  Odd how the ''Buck Rogers'' looks disappear once you bring it up to shoot - after which I reckon the ergonomics are just first class - exception might be trigger which for me is rough as hell - I intend to try and smooth it when  I get round to it!

Re a Win 94 type carbine - well, I like my Marlin in .44 mag, tho it does regretably have micro-groove rifling so lead loads are out unless I cast and size oversize - Marlin 94's tho are nice..  My Win lever is in .357 mag and I reckon that cal is a good choice - if you load or shoot that cal then you have a great handgun companion.  Not to say that good ol' ''thuddy-thuddy'' is not good too - I want a 30-30 barrel for my Contender one day.

I agree that the storm is very nice.  My friend has one with a shroud on the barrel that I think adds greatly to the aethetics.  He also put a vertical handgrip which I like.  As soon as I get around to it I will buy it off him.

As far as the Lever gun you can't go wrong with a Marlin.  The Winchester is nice too, a little nicer fit and finish than the Marlin, but it ejects out of the top which I don't like.  The Marlin has side ejection so mounting a scope is easier and the spent brass doesn't smack the bottom of your scope.  The .30-30 would pack more of a punch for hunting, but the .357 could work too for closer in.
