If the Smith's nickel finish is in good condition, I would go for it. Nickel plating (both the traditional electrolytic and the more recent electroless process) has a high degree of corosion resistance. It may be damaged, however, by certain harsh solvents, so be careful what you use to clean it. Even if the condition is not good, you could always have the weapon refinished by S&W or one of the quality custom shops.
