Barrels, Barrels, Barrels
« on: July 15, 2011, 01:21:05 AM »
Got an idea that may be a step to help fix this barrel mess.

For some reason it is stuck in my brain that the R9 barrels are made by Walther.

Is this true ?

If so, most gun guys/collectors have a Walther of some sort or two laying around the gun safe.

Check your Walther barrel, especially if it is a newer version such as a P-99 or newer PPk-s or whatever.

My bet is that it is smooth and shiney.

If so, send an e- mail to the Brothers Rohrbaugh and let them know that Walther sends good barrels to their customers, why do they send inferior ones to them?  Why do they stand for this?  And why are they charging a premium for them?

This just may stick in their crough.

Tell them your dissatisfaction while your at it.

Looks like Walther is getting all the gold and we're gettin' the shaft.  :P

I have never heard that Walther is Rohrbaugh's barrel vender.  Walther makes Kahr's barrels for their top line guns and I think gets the barrels for their economy guns from their affiliate Federal Ordinance which is a hack outfit.  I have three Kahr pistols with the Walther polygonal barrels and they are great looking and shooting.

My guess if Rohrbaugh is out-sourcing their barrels, it is probably Federal Ordinance.  They probably are making them in-house.  Who would accept this kind of quality from an outside vender.

Part III of the Factory Tour.  Scroll down below the slides to barrel cutting.

Those photos were taken in October 2004 on Duane's factory tour, presumably in Farmingdale.

That is correct and then the factory moved to Deer Park.

We know the history. The point is that these photos may or may not be relevant to the current issue. Obviously, the barrels were made in house then but they may be outsourced now.

Does it matter where the barrels are made?

Barrels are made in house on CNC machines and then rifled in house -- not outsourced.

So why are some smooth and some showing chatter marks????  Factory needs to explain better IMHO.

I don't think chatter marks is the correct term.  I am no machinist, but I think chatter marks relate to a high speed operation.  Rifling a barrel is a low speed operation.  Scoring marks is probably more accurate.

I don't know that there are smooth and not smooth barrels been generated at the same time...

Anyway -- Karl will address the issue, but that may take a little bit of time.

So sorry for all the confusion guys!  :-[

As mentioned before, I am a bonified gun addict, and I own quite a few guns.

I just got confused with some other high end gun  that I own.

Just another blonde moment.

Thank you, to those for setting me and things straight.

APPOLOGIES!
